Real Life Style Icon: Natalie of ‘The Tiny Closet’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.

Name: Natalie Live
Age: 31
Location: Los Angeles
Online haunts: instagram // twitter // website

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
LOL! Ummm, I’m a good friend, I have a great sense of humor, and I search for the goodness and value in everyone I meet.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
James Perse scoop neck tee and some really old school men’s long underwear. It’s actually pretty chic 🙂

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
I just bought stuff items from Asos.com actually! A tattered pair of jeans a few sizes too big because I want roomier feel and look and three oversize deep v-neck tees. I live in beautifully made tees!!

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: That’s always so hard to say. Since my closet is full of only things I adore, it’s hard to have a favorite – but the at the moment I am all about my sheer black floral jacket. It’s just so fresh.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I remember my mom bought me the cutest green mini skirt. I was in the 3rd grade or something and I just thought it was the most grown up thing I owned. I would put it on in my room and sit and drink tea with my Teddy Ruxpin. I was the height of elegance.
What is your best thrifting score?
I went through a thrifting phase a couple years ago. Thrifting usually isn’t my thing as I love ultra modern minimalist fashion, but I did manage to hold on to some keepers. One being a white and black very Chanel-esque long fitted dress coat with gold buttons and a built in wrap at the neck. Very regal and East African looking.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Always have your clothes fitted! A shortening here and a dart or two there can make a huge difference to how you fit your clothes.
2. Balance. If I show my legs, I cover my top. If my top is revealing, I cover my legs.
3. If you’re going to splurge, do it on coats, bags and shoes. That’s all you need to look like a million bucks. The rest can be dirt cheap!

Thanks so much for sharing, Natalie!

Real Life Style Icon: Aminta Online

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.
Name: Aminta Paiz
Age: 28
Location: Madrid
Online haunts: blog // instragram // twitter // facebook // youtube
Tell us three reasons that you’re awesome:
I’m fun, I have personality, I care about others.
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
A furry pink headband, a printed surf top with “swim deep” printed on it, a black and white skater skirt, over the knee pink socks and white platform boots.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
A thrifted yellow backpack.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
The Marc Jacobs multicolored sneakers and the Camper Himalayan sneakers.
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
Playing dressing up has always been a great experience to me. I remember playing Snow White at the school. I was 9 and I designed my costume, bought the fabric, and made part of it with a glue gun. I took the rest to a professional seamstress to sew it for me, but I was directing how I wanted it sewn. I loved that day.
What is your best thrifting score?
I think the 80% of my clothes are thrifted, I’m very good at it. I always find great bargains – I have some $ 0.50 treasures.
Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Mix prints that are the same colors.
2. Try thrift shopping and DIY the stuff you buy to make it more personal.
3. Add fun accessories – I like kids’ backpacks, pom pom earrings, and bold shoes or tights.
Thanks so much for sharing, Aminta! Your pairing as phenominal. P.S. A male fashion icon who can (allegedly) wear white pants without getting them dirty and 12 cats in haute couture.

An original Diesel leather jacket for £10!
Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?

Ellie’s fanatically stylish for 17, isn’t she? At her age, I was wearing red fleece overalls I made in Home Ec. paired with a rainbow sweater. Seriously.P.S. Did you know that you can get my freeeee ebook Be Your Own Style Icon: 15 Insanely Clever Tips + Tricks here?

Real Life Style Icon: Ria Michelle

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting people and then totally ‘borrow’ their shoes when they’re not looking

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
I keep it real, I’m funny, and a little strange.
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
A Unif muscle tee, and my boyfriend’s giant hoodie.

What is the last item of clothing you bought?

Alexander Wang Fishline Suspension Shorts
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment? Splurge: The Row Leather Backpack a little more down to earth: Manolo Blahnik Chaos Sandal
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
Definitely leaving the house and changing into my goth clothes before I got on the bus to go to school. I would change back before my mom got home because she hated the style. One day she was home early so I totally got busted, but it was nice dressing true to myself, in clothes I saved the money to buy myself.
Is there anything you absolutely WON’T wear?
You will not find me in Peplum…I just do not get it. I’ll see something cute and my eyes travel down and find peplum and just be completely turned off.
What’s your go-to outfit for a date? For a job interview?
I love a little mini dress for a date. I’m a big fan of loose fitting, comfortable garments. Job interview…I work at home for myself haha but I guess if I had to go to one, it’s be a cute two piece suit. I like a nice tailored pant with a silk blouse and a matching blazer.
Is there anything you’d like to see come back into style?
I kind of don’t want sneaker wedges to go away…only because I haven’t copped the Isabel Marant ones yet and I still kind of want to even though they’re definitely on their way out if not out. The various “inspired by” and other sneaker wedges can keep going though. Not interested lol. Thanks for sharing, Ria!

Real Life Style Icon: Mustafa of ‘Astute Atire’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to smart, funny people who also happen to be terribly stylish. Then we forward this post to the dudes in our lives with a subject line of “HINT HINT.”

Name: Mustafa Kacar
Age: 29
Location: New York, NY
Online haunts: blog // instagram // twitter // facebook
Three reasons that you’re awesome:
1 – I know 8 different stylish ways to knot a scarf!
2 – I am a craft coffee connoisseur
3 – I once wore the same pair of white jeans 5 days in a row without staining them!

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
As I’m typing this I have grey jeans from Uniqlo, a navy turtleneck sweater, and fleece slippers I like to wear at home.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
Last item I bought was a grey wool tie from J.Crew.What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?

It’s actually an accessory. I really want the Cavalier chestnut leather duffel bag from Ghurka! Would be perfect as I’ll be traveling to Europe at the end of the month for about 3 weeks.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
My favorite childhood memory about my clothing involves my mother teaching me how to iron at the age of 6!
What is your best thrifting score? My best thirfting score came last winter as I thrifted a grey cashmere Armani herringbone blazer. It’s a staple item in my closet as it’s super versatile and looks and fits amazing.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?

1 – Homemade pocket squares out of bandannas
2 – I avoid huge parkas and down jackets by simply layering. People underestimate how much layering can help you stay warm and looking stylish at the same time.
3 – I like to thrift vintage coat buttons and convert them into lapel pins for my blazers and jackets.

Thanks so much for sharing, Mustafa! Which male fashion blogs do you guys follow?  Any suggestions for future dude Real Life Style Icons?
