Real Life Style Icon: Audrey of ‘Be Frassy’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.

Name: Audrey Leighton
Age: 26
Location: I live & work in Paris & Barcelona
Online haunts: blog // instagram // twitter // facebook

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
I’m creative, very down-to-earth and really approachable.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
I’m wearing my pyjamas – they are pink and striped silk. So lovely!

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
I bought two of the same denim skirt from Asos in different washes. When I really love something, I tend to buy all available variations. Saying that, I so rarely shop for clothes, I prefer to buy books these days.

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Laurence Dacade floral embroidered heeled sandals. I adore these.

What’s your daily beauty routine?
I drink 2 + litres of water every day, I eat very, very clean and I exercise a lot – healthy living is everything to me – and really the best way to feel beautiful.

In terms of bathroom beauty – I swear by Bobbi Brown’s foaming mousse face cleanser, I apply retinol to any blemishes and I exfoliate my entire body almost every day.

Do you have any weird or unusual beauty tricks?

I use 100% alcohol to cleanse and purify my t-zone, which tends to get a little oily, especially as the weather warms up.

What do you do/wear when you want to feel particularly beautiful?
Minimal makeup and an oversized crisp white shirt.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
My mom is an incredible seamstress, so she would make all my Halloween costumes, prom dresses…every last one. I got to design them and together we would create these flamboyant but wonderful outfits.

What is your best thrifting score?
I have a few Hermes scarves that I bought for a couple euros. I love to wear them in my hair!

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
Don’t over accessorize. I always avoid this.
Match your shoes to your outfit.
Don’t emulate, just wear what feels right for you.

Thanks so much for sharing, Audrey! If you guys know of any fashion bloggers you think I should feature, leave links in the comments!

Real Life Style Icon: Sylvia of ’40 Plus Style’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.

Name: Sylvia van de Logt
Age: 48
Location: Singapore
Online haunts: blog // facebook // twitter // instagram

Tell us three reasons why you’re awesome!
Always be open to new ideas and up for new adventures. This has resulted in me living in seven different countries.

I don’t give up and work hard to achieve my goals and dreams. This helped create a successful website and me doing the work I love.

I’m honest and loyal and try to be the best mother and partner I can be.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
Shorts and a singlet. It’s the only way to stay cool in Singapore without having the aircon blasting 24/7!

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
Unique shorts and an asymmetrical blouse which will be perfect for my upcoming holiday.

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
An asymmetrical Marni skirt.
What’s your daily beauty routine?
I swear by this serum, sunblock, day cream or bb cream, a touch of lipstick which I also put on my cheeks (I like this one.) Sometimes I will put eye makeup and mascara on as well. In the evening, cleansing and night cream.
What do you do/wear when you want to feel particularly beautiful?
I love the touch and look of silk. I also know I look better when I add a touch of color. What I really need these days though to feel really beautiful is to get a good blowout. My hair is the most difficult to get right.
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I can remember that I was very opinionated about my clothes from an early age. I remember being very particular about my first communion dress which I went shopping for with my mother and got my way picking the one I wanted.

What is your best thrifting score?
I’m not very good at thrifting but am quite successful at getting some designer items at 70% off. My absolute favorite discounted item is a printed skirt from Preen. (I actually have 2 versions of that skirt now and love them both).

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Focus on creating a great silhouette and apply the rule of thirds.
2. Embrace asymmetry. It creates great interesting lines within your outfit and adds a bit of an edge.
3. Add a touch of color or some interest to your outfits through the use of unique contemporary jewelry and other accessories.
Thanks so much for sharing your style tips, Sylvia! If you guys know of any fashion bloggers you think I should feature, leave links in the comments!

Real Life Style Icon: Natalie of ‘The Tiny Closet’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.

Name: Natalie Live
Age: 31
Location: Los Angeles
Online haunts: instagram // twitter // website

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
LOL! Ummm, I’m a good friend, I have a great sense of humor, and I search for the goodness and value in everyone I meet.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
James Perse scoop neck tee and some really old school men’s long underwear. It’s actually pretty chic :)

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
I just bought stuff items from Asos.com actually! A tattered pair of jeans a few sizes too big because I want roomier feel and look and three oversize deep v-neck tees. I live in beautifully made tees!!

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: That’s always so hard to say. Since my closet is full of only things I adore, it’s hard to have a favorite – but the at the moment I am all about my sheer black floral jacket. It’s just so fresh.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I remember my mom bought me the cutest green mini skirt. I was in the 3rd grade or something and I just thought it was the most grown up thing I owned. I would put it on in my room and sit and drink tea with my Teddy Ruxpin. I was the height of elegance.
What is your best thrifting score?
I went through a thrifting phase a couple years ago. Thrifting usually isn’t my thing as I love ultra modern minimalist fashion, but I did manage to hold on to some keepers. One being a white and black very Chanel-esque long fitted dress coat with gold buttons and a built in wrap at the neck. Very regal and East African looking.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Always have your clothes fitted! A shortening here and a dart or two there can make a huge difference to how you fit your clothes.
2. Balance. If I show my legs, I cover my top. If my top is revealing, I cover my legs.
3. If you’re going to splurge, do it on coats, bags and shoes. That’s all you need to look like a million bucks. The rest can be dirt cheap!

Thanks so much for sharing, Natalie!

I absolutely love thrifting, so I have scored quite at few things along the years. Since I can only choose one then it will have to be my amazing sequin Blazer.

Real Life Style Icon: Kristin of ‘Highland Fashionista’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.
Name: Kristin Buchholz-MacKillop
Age: 43
Location: Scottish West Highlands
Online haunts: blog // twitter // facebook // instagram
Three reasons that you’re awesome:
1. I prefer to ask for forgiveness, not permission.
2. I don’t waste time wishing for things, instead I set about making them happen if they are important to me.
3. I can find comedy just about anywhere.
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
An oversize t-shirt. That’s it. Hey, it’s nighttime! Don’t judge!
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
An exquisite camel hair Ralph Lauren blazer from Ebay.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: a sleeveless coat
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
We were raised on finding quality things at a bargain and the value of buying secondhand as a guiltless shopping experience. It taught us how to really look at the “bones” of a garment and hone-in on the good stuff.
What is your best thrifting score?
There have been MANY over the years. I found a vintage Evan Piccone evening dress at Goodwill when I lived in Seattle. It was perfect in every way; a long black column with a split, and a fitted bodice. The thing fit me so well I wore it for years when I worked on cruise ships. It was my go-to formal night uniform, and it cost me $10.
Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. I’m a firm believer in taking one piece of jewellery or an accessory off before leaving the house. I think that was originally Coco Chanel’s advice, but it works.
2. I never go all-in: the painted nails AND the hair ironed or curled AND a lot of makeup AND…you get the point. I tend to focus on one or two things, max.
3. I love luxurious things (silk blouses, bouclé jackets, gemstones), but tend to style them down with things like distressed denim or even shorts to be able to wear them in the context of modern life.
Thanks so much for sharing, Kristin! (Doesn’t she make you wish you had grey hair?)
