Real Life Style Icon: Sylvia of ’40 Plus Style’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.

Name: Sylvia van de Logt
Age: 48
Location: Singapore
Online haunts: blog // facebook // twitter // instagram

Tell us three reasons why you’re awesome!
Always be open to new ideas and up for new adventures. This has resulted in me living in seven different countries.

I don’t give up and work hard to achieve my goals and dreams. This helped create a successful website and me doing the work I love.

I’m honest and loyal and try to be the best mother and partner I can be.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
Shorts and a singlet. It’s the only way to stay cool in Singapore without having the aircon blasting 24/7!

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
Unique shorts and an asymmetrical blouse which will be perfect for my upcoming holiday.

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
An asymmetrical Marni skirt.
What’s your daily beauty routine?
I swear by this serum, sunblock, day cream or bb cream, a touch of lipstick which I also put on my cheeks (I like this one.) Sometimes I will put eye makeup and mascara on as well. In the evening, cleansing and night cream.
What do you do/wear when you want to feel particularly beautiful?
I love the touch and look of silk. I also know I look better when I add a touch of color. What I really need these days though to feel really beautiful is to get a good blowout. My hair is the most difficult to get right.
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I can remember that I was very opinionated about my clothes from an early age. I remember being very particular about my first communion dress which I went shopping for with my mother and got my way picking the one I wanted.

What is your best thrifting score?
I’m not very good at thrifting but am quite successful at getting some designer items at 70% off. My absolute favorite discounted item is a printed skirt from Preen. (I actually have 2 versions of that skirt now and love them both).

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Focus on creating a great silhouette and apply the rule of thirds.
2. Embrace asymmetry. It creates great interesting lines within your outfit and adds a bit of an edge.
3. Add a touch of color or some interest to your outfits through the use of unique contemporary jewelry and other accessories.
Thanks so much for sharing your style tips, Sylvia! If you guys know of any fashion bloggers you think I should feature, leave links in the comments!

Real Life Style Icon: Natalie of ‘The Tiny Closet’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.

Name: Natalie Live
Age: 31
Location: Los Angeles
Online haunts: instagram // twitter // website

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
LOL! Ummm, I’m a good friend, I have a great sense of humor, and I search for the goodness and value in everyone I meet.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
James Perse scoop neck tee and some really old school men’s long underwear. It’s actually pretty chic :)

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
I just bought stuff items from Asos.com actually! A tattered pair of jeans a few sizes too big because I want roomier feel and look and three oversize deep v-neck tees. I live in beautifully made tees!!

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: That’s always so hard to say. Since my closet is full of only things I adore, it’s hard to have a favorite – but the at the moment I am all about my sheer black floral jacket. It’s just so fresh.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I remember my mom bought me the cutest green mini skirt. I was in the 3rd grade or something and I just thought it was the most grown up thing I owned. I would put it on in my room and sit and drink tea with my Teddy Ruxpin. I was the height of elegance.
What is your best thrifting score?
I went through a thrifting phase a couple years ago. Thrifting usually isn’t my thing as I love ultra modern minimalist fashion, but I did manage to hold on to some keepers. One being a white and black very Chanel-esque long fitted dress coat with gold buttons and a built in wrap at the neck. Very regal and East African looking.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Always have your clothes fitted! A shortening here and a dart or two there can make a huge difference to how you fit your clothes.
2. Balance. If I show my legs, I cover my top. If my top is revealing, I cover my legs.
3. If you’re going to splurge, do it on coats, bags and shoes. That’s all you need to look like a million bucks. The rest can be dirt cheap!

Thanks so much for sharing, Natalie!

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
I speak 3 languages
I can be fun at times
I like to lipstick even when I am home.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
I am wearing a t-shirt and my plaid pj pants.

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
A beautiful red cape dress by Adrianna Papell

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: I want this Marina Rinaldi moto jacket to magically appear in my closet.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I really loved digging in my mother’s closet and play dress up. I think still like to do that from time to time.

What is your best thrifting score?
I absolutely love thrifting, so I have scored quite at few things along the years. Since I can only choose one then it will have to be my amazing sequin Blazer.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?

Leopard is neutral. Yes, I said it. I wear it with everything.

Maximize your closet by mixing and matching.

Ignore the rules and wear whatever make you feel amazing.

Thanks so much for sharing, Assa!

Real Life Style Icon: Kristin of ‘Highland Fashionista’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.
Name: Kristin Buchholz-MacKillop
Age: 43
Location: Scottish West Highlands
Online haunts: blog // twitter // facebook // instagram
Three reasons that you’re awesome:
1. I prefer to ask for forgiveness, not permission.
2. I don’t waste time wishing for things, instead I set about making them happen if they are important to me.
3. I can find comedy just about anywhere.
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
An oversize t-shirt. That’s it. Hey, it’s nighttime! Don’t judge!
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
An exquisite camel hair Ralph Lauren blazer from Ebay.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: a sleeveless coat
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
We were raised on finding quality things at a bargain and the value of buying secondhand as a guiltless shopping experience. It taught us how to really look at the “bones” of a garment and hone-in on the good stuff.
What is your best thrifting score?
There have been MANY over the years. I found a vintage Evan Piccone evening dress at Goodwill when I lived in Seattle. It was perfect in every way; a long black column with a split, and a fitted bodice. The thing fit me so well I wore it for years when I worked on cruise ships. It was my go-to formal night uniform, and it cost me $10.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. I’m a firm believer in taking one piece of jewellery or an accessory off before leaving the house. I think that was originally Coco Chanel’s advice, but it works.
2. I never go all-in: the painted nails AND the hair ironed or curled AND a lot of makeup AND…you get the point. I tend to focus on one or two things, max.
3. I love luxurious things (silk blouses, bouclé jackets, gemstones), but tend to style them down with things like distressed denim or even shorts to be able to wear them in the context of modern life.

Thanks so much for sharing, Kristin! (Doesn’t she make you wish you had grey hair?)

Tell us three reasons that you’re awesome:
I’m fun, I have personality, I care about others.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
A furry pink headband, a printed surf top with “swim deep” printed on it, a black and white skater skirt, over the knee pink socks and white platform boots.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
A thrifted yellow backpack.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
The Marc Jacobs multicolored sneakers and the Camper Himalayan sneakers
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
Playing dressing up has always been a great experience to me. I remember playing Snow White at the school. I was 9 and I designed my costume, bought the fabric, and made part of it with a glue gun. I took the rest to a professional seamstress to sew it for me, but I was directing how I wanted it sewn. I loved that day.
What is your best thrifting score?
I think the 80% of my clothes are thrifted, I’m very good at it. I always find great bargains – I have some $ 0.50 treasures.
Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Mix prints that are the same colors.
2. Try thrift shopping and DIY the stuff you buy to make it more personal.
3. Add fun accessories – I like kids’ backpacks, pom pom earrings, and bold shoes or tights.

Thanks so much for sharing, Aminta! Your pairing as phenominal.

P.S. A male fashion icon who can (allegedly) wear white pants without getting them dirty and 12 cats in haute couture.

Real Life Style Icon: Ellie of ‘Rose and Vintage’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting humans who also happen to be painfully stylish. And then we distract them while we raid their closets.
Name: Ellie Connor-Phillips
Age: 17
Location: London
Online haunts: blog// tumblr // twitter
Tell us three reasons that you’re awesome:
Haha! I wouldn’t really call myself that! I’m really really typical and uncool. Trust me!
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
Pale orange polo neck jumper, patterned loose trousers, low black doc martens
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
Some bits and bobs from Beyond Retro – a dark red tartan skirt and a floral shirt.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Splurge: The leopard print skirt from Topshop that Alexa Chung wore at fashion week, and everything Miu Miu.
Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I guess the first time I ever bought vintage was on a family trip out to Spitalfields – we all ate fish and chips and strolled through the market, and I bought a big cream and navy jumper that was really my initiation into the whole second-hand scene.
What is your best thrifting score?
An original Diesel leather jacket for £10!
Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Wear everything all at once.
2. Clashing patterns are the best.
3. Being comfortable and feeling like yourself looks better than any overly thought out outfit ever could. Go crazy!

Ellie’s fanatically stylish for 17, isn’t she? At her age, I was wearing red fleece overalls I made in Home Ec. paired with a rainbow sweater. Seriously.

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
As soon as I arrive home for the evening I’m in pajamas.

What is the last item of clothing you bought?
A jacket by BCBG for half price, something I’ve been watching for a couple of months.

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Right now I’m on the hunt for a cool white bag. I know it’s out there, just haven’t found it yet.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
I remember battling with my mom over the color red. I love it and she didn’t! It was school picture day and I wanted to wear a red dress and I did.

What is your best thrifting score?
Last year I found some brown suede boots that I’ve worn out. They had a great sixties feel and went with everything.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?1. A coat is my favorite item of clothing. I look for coats with interesting details and in a variety of patterns and colors.
2. Gray tights go with just about everything. They are a nice break from the standard black.
3. I enjoy wearing knit dresses in the summer because of the comfort and easy care.

Thanks so much for sharing, Ann!

Real Life Style Icon: Carelia of ‘My Small Wardrobe’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to funny, interesting humans who also happen to be incredibly stylish.
Location: North Carolina
Online haunts: blog // facebook // instagram // tumblr // pinterest
Three reasons you’re awesome:
I am 43 and I am proud to say it.
I am the mother of two wonderful grown up boys
I never forget where I come from…Honduras.
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
Adidas workout suit and trail running sneakers. Getting ready to go for my six mile run.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
H&M Floral Maxi dress.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Burberry Trench Coat. I saved this search on Ebay hoping to find one used and with a reasonable price. I just love the fabric and the fit of their coats.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.

Way back in the early 80’s in Honduras, I cut off the sleeves of a sweater to wear them as leg warmer. Yeah, you couldn’t find leg warmers in a tropical country and who would need them? In my defense, they looked cool and I even saw a couple gals at my school wearing the cut-off sleeves as leg warmers later in the year.

What is your best thrifting score?
A vintage needlepoint bag, so Dolce & Gabbana!
Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?
1. Mixing patterns, colors and textures is one of my favorite tricks when getting ready. Life is too short for a boring look.
2. Juxtaposition is another way of mixing in order to give a certain edge to my looks. Perhaps combining soft and girly with tomboyish pieces is always a very refreshing combo.
3. Styling with high, low and vintage pieces is my third way of making my looks more personal and unique. I don’t feel the need of wearing designer name brands from head to toes in order to look chic.
Thanks so much for sharing, Carelia!

Real Life Style Icon: Ria Michelle

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to clever, interesting people and then totally ‘borrow’ their shoes when they’re not looking

Three reasons that you’re awesome:
I keep it real, I’m funny, and a little strange.
What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
A Unif muscle tee, and my boyfriend’s giant hoodie.

What is the last item of clothing you bought?

Alexander Wang Fishline Suspension Shorts
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment? Splurge: The Row Leather Backpack a little more down to earth: Manolo Blahnik Chaos Sandal

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
Definitely leaving the house and changing into my goth clothes before I got on the bus to go to school. I would change back before my mom got home because she hated the style. One day she was home early so I totally got busted, but it was nice dressing true to myself, in clothes I saved the money to buy myself.

Is there anything you absolutely WON’T wear?
You will not find me in Peplum…I just do not get it. I’ll see something cute and my eyes travel down and find peplum and just be completely turned off.
What’s your go-to outfit for a date? For a job interview?
I love a little mini dress for a date. I’m a big fan of loose fitting, comfortable garments. Job interview…I work at home for myself haha but I guess if I had to go to one, it’s be a cute two piece suit. I like a nice tailored pant with a silk blouse and a matching blazer.
Is there anything you’d like to see come back into style?
I kind of don’t want sneaker wedges to go away…only because I haven’t copped the Isabel Marant ones yet and I still kind of want to even though they’re definitely on their way out if not out. The various “inspired by” and other sneaker wedges can keep going though. Not interested lol.

Thanks for sharing, Ria!

Real Life Style Icon: Mustafa of ‘Astute Atire’

This is one of many Real Life Style Icon interviews in which we talk to smart, funny people who also happen to be terribly stylish. Then we forward this post to the dudes in our lives with a subject line of “HINT HINT.”

Name: Mustafa Kacar
Age: 29
Location: New York, NY
Online haunts: blog // instagram // twitter // facebook
Three reasons that you’re awesome:
1 – I know 8 different stylish ways to knot a scarf!
2 – I am a craft coffee connoisseur
3 – I once wore the same pair of white jeans 5 days in a row without staining them!

What are you wearing right now, as you type this?
As I’m typing this I have grey jeans from Uniqlo, a navy turtleneck sweater, and fleece slippers I like to wear at home.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
Last item I bought was a grey wool tie from J.Crew.

What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?

It’s actually an accessory. I really want the Cavalier chestnut leather duffel bag from Ghurka! Would be perfect as I’ll be traveling to Europe at the end of the month for about 3 weeks.

Tell us about a favorite childhood memory about your clothes.
My favorite childhood memory about my clothing involves my mother teaching me how to iron at the age of 6!
What is your best thrifting score? My best thirfting score came last winter as I thrifted a grey cashmere Armani herringbone blazer. It’s a staple item in my closet as it’s super versatile and looks and fits amazing.

Could you tell us your top three style tricks/DIYs?

1 – Homemade pocket squares out of bandannas
2 – I avoid huge parkas and down jackets by simply layering. People underestimate how much layering can help you stay warm and looking stylish at the same time.
3 – I like to thrift vintage coat buttons and convert them into lapel pins for my blazers and jackets.

Thanks so much for sharing, Mustafa! Which male fashion blogs do you guys follow?  Any suggestions for future dude Real Life Style Icons?
