Web Time Wasters

Doesn’t this sound like 2006 in the best way? Skip to 1:26 to get past the self-indulgent ‘rock band behind the scenes’ stuff.

What’d you get up to this week, friends? I joined a choir a few months ago (part of knowing what makes me happy and adding more of it to my life) and we had our last rehearsal before a set of performances. And on Friday, I crossed Aerial Yoga off my New Things list! This weekend, I’m thrifting and helping Kenny and the boys take on the Sweet 16 Challenge.

Awesome things from my sponsors

Andi’s blog is stuffed with helpful travel advice: tips for budget travel in Mexico, an insanely thorough guide to San Francisco, and how to prepare your cat for travel!

Michelle is talking about so many important things. As a no-bio-kids-for-me-thanks stepmom, I loved her podcast about deciding if you want to have kids or not. And her interview with Quirky Alone founder Sasha Cagen is great!

I was on Elise’s podcast this week, talking about blogging with purpose and why I wish someone had told me that I probably wasn’t the exception to the rule.

I finally splashed out on a pair of these and – no lie – I almost audibly groaned with pleasure when I put them on. Worth every penny, especially if you have high arches! Also: investing in good footwear is an investment in your spine, your muscles, and your overall health! Seriously!

Our master bedroom is an attic bedroom, so I loved this sweet roundup of upper-story rooms.

And if you’re a fellow renter/Midwesterner, you might like this tour of two gorgeous Chicago rentals.

Ha! ‘Seinfeld’ episodes from the girlfriend’s perspective.
Marlene is dating a guy named George Costanza because she’s at that point in her life where she’s like, “Maybe instead of dating a series of hot assholes, I will date one man who is kind to me.” As it turns out, while George is not hot, he is an asshole. Then Marlene dates George’s lightly-wracked-with-guilt but primarily horny friend, Jerry, for a while, until she sees Jerry do standup.

I’m spending Monday – Wednesday of next week in South Dakota and I’m going try a few of these things!

What do White House correspondents pack in their bags?

It’s officially smoothie season (as we’ve discussed a million times, I SWEAR by this blender. Do not bother with a Vitamix, friends). Make morning smoothies easier with some minimal and clever planning.

I loved this: How to claim freedom from all kinds of bullshit.
Freedom from squeezing in productivity. We don’t have to listen to podcasts or educational audio books while working out, making dinner, driving, or showering. We can engage in one task at a time and even ‘waste’ a bunch of time each day.

Wow! Hear from the granddaughter of the real life inspiration for Wonder Woman!

Do you think of yourself as self-aware? I like to think I am, but we all have blind spots, don’t we? Apparently only 15% of people are actually self-aware. Here’s how to start to change that.

Yesssss! I love buying beauty products in other countries! The Mysterious Allure of a Foreign Drugstore
There’s always so much good stuff in there — slithery clear lotions, or shampoo bottles with a lot of roses on them, and packaging that just generally hints at priorities different than my own.

Related: the entire archive of my Mornings In series, chronicling the breakfast and beauty routines of women from all over the world.

Interesting! In relationships, should we be our truest self or our best self?

Somewhat related: Did you know that France’s new president met his wife when he was 15? And she was his 40 year old, married high school drama teacher?

And a sweet poem.

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

Emmanuel Macron is actually our new president, not prime minister 🙂 And unfortunately, his wife has been the subject of a lot of sexist, ageist jokes because of the age gap between them…

Eeep! Thanks for the head’s up on the job title. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with their age gap. As a former teacher, I can’t say much for the ethics of sleeping with a teenage student while you’re married.

I totally forgot about your “Mornings In” series, I absolutely loved it! Thanks for bringing it back up 🙂 Also, I can’t help but notice that you do quite a bit of midwestern travel, but I don’t think I’ve seen you come to Michigan! So. Girl: come to Michigan!! We have lakes (best), fresh fruits and veggies all over (extra best), amazing people, great small towns and great big towns, and did I mention all the lakes? Get out here!

It’s so funny you should say that, Valentina because I’m going to Michigan in two weeks! Lansing + Sleeping Bear Dunes!

Oh YAY! Make sure you go to Cheese Shop in Leland for the best sandwiches of your life. Get one on pretzel bread! Welcome to the Great Lakes state! Can’t wait to see how much you enjoy it here 🙂

Thanks for the reminder on buying quality footwear! I’m totally an under-buyer who wears cheapo shoes into the ground and then gets crabby when my feet hurt…
