January Network of Nice! Editors + Travel Advice + New Friends

So what's the deal with this Network of Nice business?

Welp, it's people seeking un-Googleable advice/input/friendships.
Or people offering advice/input/free services in a bid to fill out their portfolios

If you're new to the Network of Nice, here's the deal:
1) Read through these hook up requests. Can you help them? Yes? Email those lovely people.
2) Read through these hook up offers. Do you need that help? Yes. Email those lovely people.
3) If you have been lucky enough to receive help from someone, you write them a prompt and grammatically correct thank you email. Because you are a kind, well-manner emotionally mature adult who wasn't raised by wolves.

Also! If you're concerned that someone will beat you to the freebies, I sent out the Network of Nice in my newsletter at 6 am CST, the day it goes up. That same newsletter will include discount codes from select Yes and Yes sponsors - so you might want to open that email when it shows up. You can sign up for the newsletter here.

I need a hook up!
I'm looking for potential friends in Central Jersey
I recently moved to the area from slightly farther north, and I'd love to meet people. I'm a twenty-four-year-old Spanish and French teacher, and I love coffee, baking, makeup, going to the gym, and fantasy books. I'd love to get together for coffee, drinks, shopping, or general bonding of any kind, and I will probably bring cupcakes.

I need advice about working in Academia
I am a PhD candidate in Human Development & Family Studies. While I love teaching (and have been told I have a knack for it), I have very little passion for research. My dream has always been to be a professor at a small, teaching-focused college, but the job market is becoming hugely competitive and research-oriented. At this point, I'm uncertain whether I would actually be a viable candidate for academia, or what non-academic, non-research career options exist. I would love insight from anyone who has recently been through the social science job market, is currently employed at a teaching school, or knows of other career paths I could look into. Thanks!

I am looking for someone with experience starting a small coffee shop and/or crowd funding
I am in the process of opening Dirt, a non-profit coffee bar in Denver, with a mission to employ individuals with autism. We are in the middle of our fundraiser and hope to open in the spring. I am very open to any coffee-related small business or fundraising advice, as this is all new to me! Thanks!

I am looking at getting much fitter, and to particularly increase my running speed and strength
I am dedicated (mostly) but I don't know where to start. I have never been much into exercise (bar my beloved yoga) and I am pretty short on funds at the moment so cannot afford a gym membership/ personal trainer at this stage. I would love some guidance.

I am looking for someone to be a business mentor
I would like to find someone who started a business from nothing (and can even help with the idea stage) who would be willing to mentor me and answer the crazy questions and address the even crazier fears I have. Oh, and also help to hold me accountable for meeting my goals/intentions.

I'd like to transition from non-profit work into teaching
I've been working as a nonprofit professional in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly 7 years, and while I love my work, I've been considering transitioning to a career in teaching. I would love to hear from readers who have done this, and would appreciate the perspectives from folks who have done traditional credential programs and those who have done urban teaching fellowship programs, as I think there are benefits to doing both. I can be reached at

I want to know about living in Anchorage.
I'm a law student and will be working in Anchorage, AK for the summer and could use any advice about living, packing and things to do! I'm also queer and my girlfriend will be living with me so I want to know how LGBT-friendly the area is.

I want to know about tutoring English online!
I have a graduate certificate in TESOL from a New Zealand university, and lots of one-to-one tutoring experience. I'm thinking about tutoring online for extra money. If you've done this before, I'd love to talk to you about your experiences and get some advice on how to start out. Thanks in advance!  Send me an email on

I can train you to be your own ninja
In 2010, I survived cancer at the age of 25. I learned how to be my own advocate in life. I can offer a one hour phone/skype call to help you find out what you really want and what you really need from life. Have you ever thought about writing to Dear Abby but you wanted a specific, personalized and private answer right away? And from someone who has been there, done that and survived it with style? By the end of our talk, you’ll be your own Mr Miyagi without having to repaint my house.

  1. I love this feature. It's so fascinating seeing both what people are looking for and what they are willing to do for others. Thanks for providing this platform, Sarah!

  2. Wowza! the IUD and menstrual cup advice has been popular. Sarah, if you're short on entries for next month I'm happy to do it again.
