Let’s be nice for 9 days! Um, starting Monday.

February is a month traditionally devoted to:

a) freaking out about finding the perfect gift for your Special Person
b) feeling weird/sad that you don’t have A Special Person

c) not caring that you don’t have A Special Person because you’re too busy being awesome

And while all of the above are perfectly valid ways to spend your February, I suspect we can do better.  But if we’re going to stick with the theme of love, what if we devoted nine days to showing the world (and everybody in it) that we loved them?
Now, stop puking in your mouth and listen for a second.
Just like everybody else ever, I like to think of myself as A Good Person. I donate to charities, I bring my own bags to the grocery store, I only make my cat wear a bow tie once a week. But there’s something to be said for setting aside a specific time period to really, actually make an effort.  To that end, I’m going to spend Feb 4-14th doing nice things and writing about them – and I’d love it if you’d join me!

If you want a head start, here’s the plan:

February 4th: Write a positive yelp review for a small business you love
February 5th: Pay off someone’s layaway plan

February 6th: Write a thank-you note to a former teacher or mentor
February 7th: Praise someone to their supervisor
February 8th: Give a gift card to a homeless personFebruary 11th: Call your grandparents (or any other relative)

February 12th: Clean up a public space
February 13th: Send a care package to a soldier
February 14th: surprise!
Each day I’m going to do these things and write about them – and if you do them and write about them, I’d love to share your blog posts/photos/tweets about the experience. If you’re feeling really, really participatory you can tag your tweets and photos #9daysofnice or post your photos on the Yes and Yes Facebook page.

I’m genuinely excited to do this. I do hope you’ll join me!

I find so much inspiration in your posts, but this really takes the cake. I can't wait to follow along! I have a newborn and a 15-month old, so if I can't regularly post on my actual blog, I will (at the very least) be posting updates on the Simple Girl facebook page. Thank you for always making the internet and happier and more hopeful place!

Ms. Cathy

A GRAND idea.

Like I told you earlier on Twitter – – I started the 1st of the month by buying breakfast (donuts, bagels and cream cheese) for all of the lovely people I work with.

I like making others happy. And from doing that, I get to work in a happy environment – it's a win win situation!

i love this idea! but i have to ask–how do you pay off someone's layaway plan for them? do you have to find someone with a layaway plan or. . . how does that happen? can't wait to read people's stories.

i'm doing an instagram photo challenge for feb, and if anyone wants to post pics from their days of nice there, that would be fun— #LoveLifeFeb2013 –the idea is to post something heart-warming, life-affirming every day…

lovin' the love this month!
