Web Time Wasters

What did you get up to this week, guys?
I caught up an out-of-town friend, worked on a Solution Session for a cool online boutique, nearly danced my pants off at hip hop dance class and then went to a monster truck rally with a bunch of friends!  Yes, really.  It was The Best.  Blog post coming.  Obviously.

But enough about monster trucks.  Let's talk about links!

The older I get and the more I travel, the more I realize that international volunteering (and even domestic volunteering) can be counter-productive if it's not structured correctly.  A friend recommended this book and I'm excited to dig into it.  It's couched in Christianity (I'm Agnostic) but I've heard really good things about it.

What happened to downtime?

A cute interview with our collective BFFs Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.  And GIFs of our other BFF Rebel Wilson.

Lemony spinach hummus?  Yes please.  Also: 5 Things To Do With Cauliflower.

What happens when you come out after five years of marriage?

As someone who's joyfully childfree and whose friends are all having kids, I appreciated this article: Some Dos and Don't For People Without Kids When Dealing With Their Breeder Friends.
Do volunteer to help out with the kids. Maybe you don't consider yourself to be "a kid person," and that's okay. I don't consider myself to be "a furniture person," but I still wouldn't stand there and watch you move a couch all alone. Kids come with an absurdly long list of both gear and needs that we have to juggle. Learning how to put in and take out a car seat, or getting little Timmy a refill on his milk, might be things well outside your comfort zone, but they can be an enormous relief to a busy parent. Besides, that's what friends do.

I want to dress like Catherine when I grow up.  Or now.  Now's good, too.

I work really hard to keep my life simple, so I loved this post about living with less.

What a cute idea!  Movie Bingo Night.

Katie shares the formula for writing The World's Best Thank You Note.

Be Wrong As Fast As You Can.
For at least 25 years, I’ve been serial daydreaming like this, recording hundreds of ideas in a sequence of little notebooks that I have carried around and then stacked in a shoe box in my closet, a personal encyclopedia of undone to-do’s. Sometimes, when I’m searching for something in my closet and I see the box, I have a flashback to my first-grade report card: “Hugo has the gift of a rich, active imagination, but needs to work on his follow-through skills.”

One of my favorite local bands (Van Stee) just released a new album and you can stream the whole thing for free here!  Also: I love this weird Shiny Toy Guns cover of Nothing Compares 2 U.

A few Yes and Yes posts you might have missed: Work vs Life, Fun vs. Money, Operation Get Sh*t Done, and The 5 Beauty Tips That I Know.

Hope you had a great weekend, guys!

  3. !! I am so thrilled you've linked that book! I am currently working towards a career goal of collaborating with NGOs and the communities they intend to help (to make it a good experience for ALL!)- I am in the middle of writing a research proposal and was looking for more books for my proposed bibliography, so thanks!

This is a super-super important topic and I'm so glad you and others are talking about it!

  5. That productivity video was the bomb! My work schedule recently changed dramatically. I work part time, and I used to have every Friday free. I used to spend that entire day doing my blog work, which included things like researching and writing posts, filming videos, contacting sponsors, website maintenance and more. Now, I'm working five days a week, but I only work 3.5 hours each day. I expected that I'd be a lot less productive without my 'blogging day'. Actually, I find that I'm getting a lot more done because my schedule forces me to be more deliberate with my work and schedule tasks ahead of time. So I really agree with the first part of the video.

I find that if I try to make a to-do list the night before,I won't sleep well because my mind starts ticking over the things I have to do the next day. I find that I work much better if I make my to-do list while I wait for my morning pot of tea to brew. It helps me to go into my work with a clear focus, without compromising my sleep.
