How was your week, friends? Did you know that I have a special place in my heart for Top 40 hip hop? And ridiculous dance clubs? Well, I do. So I obviously rang in the New Year at one such place, wearing a weird sweater dress with epaulettes made from tiny chains and my grandma's fur capelet. You know how we do. And on New Year's Day a bunch of girlfriends joined me in a polar ice dive. So much more fun than it sounds!
Enough about my shenanigans. Here are some links!
This 'minimum wage machine' certainly provokes some thoughts.
I'm always fascinated by other cultures' interpretations of gender - I'd never heard of Albania's 'sworn virgins.'
Sworn virgins have existed for centuries. According to tradition dating back to the 15th century developed out of the Kanun, a tribal code of law, tribal clans from the Balkans considered families without a male presence as pariahs. When blood feuds decimated all the men in a family, the only way to salvage their honor was for a woman to become the patriarch of the clan and start acting like a man.
Oh, the hilarity. Excerpts from my 10-year-old diary.
Two of my favorite things: animals and fruit. Animals made from fruit!
New internet crush/must-read-all-the-archives blogger: Chelsea Fagen.
I'm obsessed with the Recitethis site. I particularly love making images out of funny things my friends say and then posting said images on their Facebook walls. Like "Sh*tty cookies make me angry" and "You'll live" and "There's a big difference between being emotionally available and in touch with your feelings and just being a spaz all the time."
I suspect that this book was written for me. Has anyone read it?
I loved this: Things Successful People Don't Do.
In fact, successful people make lots of mistakes! What they don’t do is suffer over the fact that a mistake was made or the consequences. Instead, they accept responsibility, learn from what went right until it didn’t, correct what can be corrected and MOVE ON! Successful people don’t waste time wringing their hands, blaming others or suffering!
Persimmons are in season! Here's a great cocktail recipe that includes them.
And some Yes and Yes posts you might have missed: Rocking a champagne life on a beer budget and How To Make Your Apartment Look Good On A Budget.
Hope you had a great weekend!
Just spent an hour pouring over these links. Love that Recite site ( I won't pretend I wasn't making it print embarrassingly immature sayings). And can I thank you for your comment on my blog? It really meant a lot to me that a huge, really cool blogger would take the time to wish me well. I'm off to dig up a sweater dress I think I have somewhere in the back of my closet!
ReplyDeleteThe minimum wage machine thing is genius. So true. I know I would tire of it fast. Yet, I have worked jobs that paid barely minimum wage, and considered myself lucky to have them at the time. It's a shame, really.
ReplyDeleteI met Chris Martin in a pub in North London many years ago, before their first album and before he met Gwyneth and when I was blonde and had a major crush on him... Still kick myself that I didnt make a better connection with him, I could have children named like fruit by now! lol
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that ReciteThis site just launched our personal jokes into the stratosphere!
ReplyDeleteOh Sarah, that 50 things to stop doing... list is exactly what I needed to read right now. I just (as in an hour ago) told my boss that I was stepping down from my job, which was such an agonizing decision. I need to print that list out and put it in my purse to remind myself that I made the right choice for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for these. 50 things to stop doing forever and Things Successful People Don't Do. I can't even bring myself to close their browser windows. Maybe I'll print them out & hang in my office. Glad you introduced me :)
