Why You Need To Go The Eff To Sleep

This guest post comes to us via the awesome and lovely Liz of Being Geeky Chic fame. She writes about technology, comics, style, design, apps and a million other things on the regular. Pop over and say hi!

I bought a new mattress and pillow this week. The reason? I’m investing in my resting.

There was a time not too long ago where sleeping for 5 or 6 hours a night didn’t seem like that big of a deal. As long as I was getting SOME sleep, it seemed like I was doing the right thing. Nevermind the fact that I’d sleep until noon on the weekends to try and “catch up” on lost ZZZs.

I now realize that this is what’s causing my irritability, my inability to remember any detail and my general lack of excitement for the day.

May I propose a solution?

You really, really need to invest in your rest.

I know that I’m the number one offender here. But I feel we all need a bit of a jolt. I am certain that I have friends who are just as guilty of skipping the sheets. I’m confident I have co-workers running around exhausted. So while this diatribe is partially me convincing myself that this needs to be a priority, I also know that we all need a friendly reminder. That’s why I’m ready to give you a list of pros and cons.

Let’s start with the cons.
There are NO cons important enough to skip your 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

See, we’re off to a great start!

I promise. No blog posts. No video games. No book chapters. All those things will be there tomorrow. I promise.

That was easy. Now, the pros.
1. It’s good for your memory.
2. It’s good for your weight.
3. It’s good for your overall health.
4. It’s replenishing emotionally.
5. It’s replenishing physically.
6. When you enter a deep sleep state, your brain releases repairing hormones that improve your very existence. Your skin, your eyes, your fingernails. All these things need time to repair from the damage we inflict upon them during the day.
7. You know how you REALLY want to watch a movie TONIGHT at 11PM, because you won’t have time tomorrow? Well, the hours you’re saving tonight are being shaved off your life. It sounds dramatic, but it’s true. People who sleep for the recommended 7-8 hours per night live longer.
8. Your attention span is reportedly at least 30% better when you are rested.

And on top of all that, you’ll probably be a hell of a lot happier too.

I want to be happier. I want to wake up in the morning and not feel IMMEDIATELY overwhelmed about getting up. I don’t want my first thought in the morning to be: I’m tired.

So friends, let’s go to bed.

How many hours of shut eye do you get?  Any getting-to-sleep tricks to share?

  1. Are you spying on me? Seriously, this post is EXACTLY what I needed right now, it's like you wrote it just for me. I was just writing a post about my horrible sleeping cycle. I will now use this post as gospel every night at midnight when I am considering just another half hour (+) on the internet.

  2. I get 8-9 hours but still feel tired when I wake up until I get in the shower! Part of my ritual I guess!

  3. I try to go to sleep before midnight as much as possible--but I swear it's my boyfriend that causes the problems! he's a late sleeper :( maybe I'll show him this list! x

  4. I'm trying so hard to be better about this. I try to go to bed between 9-10pm every night and wake up at 5. I very consciously manage my time after work because those 4 hours before bed go by so fast! So far it's working pretty well but I'm still always exhausted and can't find a health reason for it.

  5. I get between 7.5-9 hours of sleep a night. Nine seems to be my perfect number, but that's not always going to happen. I totally agree with this--it's so good for you in so many aspects.

  6. Anonymous, you inspire me. I am trying to do the same thing! But yeah, the boyfriend can be a bit of a hurdle himself, especially if you've been busy all day and it feels like the only time you have together is eight hours before you need to wake up again.

  7. Can't sleep? Here's a little mantra that could help: 'even though I cannot sleep, I deeply love and accept myself.' Repeat it and it could ease that 'oh-holy-jeepers-cats-my-life-is-ruined anxiety that I know I get during those sleepless nights.

  8. Oh man, are you right about all the benefits of sleep. I've been wrestling with a wicked case of insomnia lately and it is really crazy just how much too little sleep messes with your body. Dealing with this has reaffirmed my desire to make sure I hit the sack on time as soon as my body works itself through it's hangups.

  9. Man oh man! Sleep and I have such a complicated relationship. I am sleeping *better* than I used to and I can not believe the difference it makes. I can not even imagine how good I would feel if I actually slept soundly for the recommended amount of time!

  10. We should all already know these things, but it's so easy to forget! I agree that the time between getting home and when I should go to sleep FLIES by. But just last night instead of watching the last episode of Mad Men or Nurse Jackie or getting up to charge my kindle, I let myself go to sleep at a reasonable time, and woke up without that usual heavy OMG I can't do this feeling.

  11. I get around six hours per night and I can definitely feel its effect on me - it's hard, I have so much to get done and so little time. Am going to be a bit more freed up in a week or so though, cannot wait to sleep a bit more than I currently do!

I'm not really the best sleeper when I do get down to it, but I find a little pre-bed yoga helps.

  12. I've been working on this for a while now, but have let some of the good habits I built up slip away so this is a great reminder! I used to be really bad and fall asleep to the tv because otherwise I would just lie in bed worrying. I've since swapped to books and my quality of sleep has improved so much! My bedtime keeps creeping back though, so time to get it back in check!

  13. If you haven't seen Arianna Huggington's TED talk on sleep, it's certainly worth a watch.

  14. We just got a new mattress for this reason! All of my friends make fun of me when I go home at 9pm, but I love sleep.

  15. I really needed to read this! I keep thinking about it, but I never really other people talk about it. Most of my friends run on 6 to 5 hours of sleep and never complain of being tired, while I on the other hand am dying! Recently I have been trying to create a decent sleeping schedule for myself to go to sleep (I really messed up my sleeping schedule)and I listen to this song called "Weightless" by Marconi Union and it was even proven by UK scientists that this song helps a person relax almost to the point that they fall asleep. I personally have it on a playlist that plays ONLY that song twice and I'm out like a light!
