Notes From The Road: Mardi Gras

For the next four weeks, I’ll be Cajun-ing it up in Louisiana. There will be Mardi Gras-ing, there will be grit-eating, there will be dancing to Zydeco music.

I just love Louisiana.  Just.love.it.  If you’ve never been here but you want a taste of Oh-my-God-this-feels-like-a-different-country, let me recommend it heartily.  The accents are different, the food’s different, the holidays are different.

Behold, the awesomeness that is Mardi Gras in Lafayette, LA.

If you’ve always been intrigued by Mardi Gras but you’re intimidated by the hub bub and boobie-flashing of New Orleans, you should absolutely check out Lafayette’s celebrations.  There’s nary a boob in sight, the public drunkenness is kept to a minimum and crowds at the parades are only two or three people deep.  Perfect!

You do, of course, still have to watch out for all the flying beads.  And do your best not to catch them with your face.  Not that I speak from experience or anything.

Yes & Yes! Love that you did Lafayette Mardi Gras! Isn't it a great town? Next time you're down here you'll have to head out to Mamou for a different experience all together. I love small-town Louisiana Mardi Gras, Glad to see so many folks experiencing it!

I'm so desperate to go to a Mardi Gras celebration! We have Pancake Day here in the UK, which is awesome but there are no sparkly beads or fun costumes! Will definitely keep this in mind if I ever head over 🙂

That looks like so much fun! Like Amy said, pancake day's good, but it's just food, Mardi Gras looks like the most amazingly fun day ever! It's definitely something I long to be a part of one day!

It's the one part of the US I really really really want to go – but what's up with the tiny wine bottles 😉 ?

Ah… so true! Mardi Gras is chaos in New Orleans, but the rest of the Gulf Coast celebrates in somewhat more "family friendly" style…
