Looking for your weekly Web Time Wasters? They're coming out via The Yes and Yes Gazette this week!
Though Yes and Yes is generally a place of positivity (and photos of animals in buckets) it's also a place of Keeping It Real. I've been working away on The Winter Survival Series and I wanted to know exactly what you guys hated about these months of darkness and cold. I personally dislike 4:00 pm sunsets and my never-ending desire for carbs+cheese+Parks and Rec.
I asked you what (exactly) sucked and here's what you guys said:
Heather McClure The
darkness makes me very grumpy. And second might be having to clean the
snow and ice off my car at 6:30 in the morning (in the dark!).
Abigail Cross - 40 is the biggest downer. Snow I can handle. Although the darkness is another downer, coming home at 5 to a dark apartment is never fun.
Rita Bee Haha! The cold and snow - why do I still live in Wisconsin??!!
Melissa-Leigh Gore Seconded. I am also not terribly fond of waiting for trains in the windy cold!
Anna Purdy Anything below 50 degrees is too cold. At that point I hate everything.
David Tesch Lack of bicycling/soccer weather, and that lower-back freeze you get when you get into a cold car.
Francine Bryce The lack of foot wear options. I wear the same black boots with every outfits while my colorful mary janes sit sadly in the closet. (I guess I could buy more shoes...:)
Jasmine Turner chapped lips :(
Catherine Elaine Smith Bitter wind. And weight gain.
Rachel Gans Static Electricity!

Ellie_Di The wind/grey skies. I know the light will come back eventually, but that crap cuts right to the
scoutfinch1 When it rains in winter & there's wind in addition! The cold just gets worse and it's like a self imposed house arrest!
cupocofe eight hundred layers of clothes and the resulting static. catching the 7am bus tho that one is not seasonal, i guess.
sanguiknitie Totally the dark. And the dryness that makes my skin look reptilian. Yum.
jessica_hobbs Going to work in the dark, staying indoors all day, and going home in the dark.
running_home it's not so bad in seattle, but I used to live in MI. The cold! The
ugly piles of snow/dirt, & how no one wants to do anything.
What do you guys hate about winter? How do you deal with it?

Dry skin - particularly my hands on which the skin tends to crack if it gets too bad. This is the first winter I've been really vigilant about carrying around hand lotion to avoid that, even though the kind I bought smells kind of weird. :P
Also wearing sneakers in unexpected rain and having to tromp around in wet shoes all day is the WORST.
How paralysed you feel in the cold! Can't move, can't breathe. Also the early nights and chapped lips. Not fun!

the many MANY days when the temps are well below freezing. -25 to -30 is very very common where i live (that converts to -13 to -22 in fahrenheit).
and the dark. waking up in dark, sitting in a windowless office all day, and going home when it's dark.
I can handle winter when there's snow because it amps up the little light there is - but winter without snow is just dark, dreary, and oftentimes feels colder because of the combined effect of rain + wind...
What I love about winter, though (apart from snow of course), is the look of bare trees against the ever-changing sky!
-how even though my lawn is still green (because somehow grass doesn't die when it's cold out, wtf?) the whole world is so black and white. I miss color.
-the monotony of everyday in winter.
-weight gain, seconded! all my body wants is to sit quietly and eat warm things like pies and casseroles. so april arrives and i am a bear coming out of hibernation. whomp whomp.
-relying on a hot shower to warm me up in the morning
-i miss ice cream stands!!
-and fresh fruit!!!
-pretty much everything else the other girls said: dry skin, staticky hair, nothing to do if you don't like snowsports, sweeping off the car
I actually usually love winter because snow is such an amazing and wonderful thing... (I know, crazy and annoying but I love it). THIS winter does suck though because there is no snow here in Boston. It's cold and wet and I'm stuck inside with my one year old and there's not even any snow to enjoy!
Walking to class when the paths are not salted. My school thinks using soy sauce is more eco-friendly. It probably is, but it doesn't work.
I hate the darkness! I feel that I leave the house to go to work and it's dark, and when I get home it's dark! Ah, spring where are you?
Definitely the darkness. I hate getting up when it is pitch black and coming home in darkness. Can't wait for spring! And glad it is not just me who thinks winter is miserable ;-)
AGHHH I HATE WINTER. I live in the heart of the Midwest where, not only is it absolutely freezing, but the frigid prairie wind just blasts the cold right into your bones. I hate how tight and sore your muscles get because they stay clenched up against the cold all the time. I hate that my body gets all blubbery and pale for 4 months. I hate bloody, chapped lips and scaly, dry hands. ...Who wants to move to Mexico with me? We can work on our Spanish!
Not being able to get the kids outside for enough exercise. They'll play happily in the playground in summer, but oddly they balk at burning the same amount of energy running up and down the stairs repeatedly.
Yea, yea... you'll start complaining when there's no more white winters, mits nor scarfs! I MISS "real" winter!
definitely the cold. also, the intellectually stifling feeling that i get whenever i'm stuck inside with nothing to do except work. :/
The dark. Definitely the dark.
I hate when people can't drive in the snow and crash into me. Ugh! The worst!
