On March 20th I'm joyfully, loudly, lustily launching my next travel ebook 'Smart + Sassy + Solo: Adventures in Lady Travel.' To help us emotionally prepare for this momentous occasion, I thought I'd put together some wee travel guides on my favorite destinations!
In 2006, I spent four amazing weeks in the Cyclades Islands of Greece, stuffing my face with cheese, riding donkeys and wrangling giant land tortoises at a wildlife rehabilitation center. It's not exaggerating to call the experience magical.
Must do
Rent a scooter
If you can't see Greece on the back of a donkey, at least you can see it on the back of a scooter. You can rent them by the day or week - I got mine for seven euros a day. I'm not sure if it's possible to feel more joyful than you'll feel flying down island roads on a sunny day, on your way to the beach.
Sunbathe topless
Sure, there are lots of countries and plenty of beaches where you can take off your top. But sometimes it's not culturally appropriate (topless girls in Thailand, I'm looking at you) and sometimes it's not really hot enough. Greece is steaming hot and very pro-boobies. Once you start doing this, you'll never want to cover up, ever again.

Explore ruins
Greece is rife with the remains of temples and palaces. Explore a few, take a million photos and have a go at reenacting Gladiator. (Yes, I'm aware that movie is set in Rome. But running around in tumble down arenas is awesome in almost any country)
Must Go
Santorini
A cluster of islands? Centered around an ancient volcano? With some of the best sunsets in the world? And donkey rides for five euros? Sure, it's a bit touristy and maybe frequented by a few too many honeymooners, but all these people come here for a reason - it's awesome.
Must eat
Fried halloumi
Fried halloumi
This amazing cheese can be fried without melting! Imagine a giant block of fried cheese, served up with lemons and fresh tomatoes. Is your mouth watering yet? I just drooled on my keyboard a little bit.
Greek yogurt - every.single.flavor.
I'm sure you've probably tried the Yoplait version of Greek yogurt - but not surprisingly, that doesn't hold a candle to the real deal. Not only is the local version mind-blowingly creamy, it's available in all sorts of great flavors. My favorite was black cherry.
Ouzo
Crisp, licorice flavored hard liquor served cold. Perfect after a day of topless sunbathing!
Cultural tip
All that whistling and ogling that you experience on the cobble-stoned streets of Greece? As intimidating and yucky as it seems, it's actually meant as a compliment. An Greek girlfriend of mine who had traveled through The States was actually offended that American men had the nerve to ignore her!
Traveling on the cheap
Late August to mid-October is Greece's 'shoulder season' - meaning that the weather is still good, but most of the tourists are gone and the prices are low. And with Greece's current economic situation, prices are good pretty much anywhere!
I spent most of my time in Greece on the island of Paros, working at a wildlife rehabilitation center. We hosted all sorts of animals - blind falcons, round-faced owls, pink-nosed twin ferrets. A few weeks in, the director introduced Leonides, a blind donkey to the group. Someone had abandoned him on the city streets, leaving him to fend for himself in the dumpsters. And a few weeks later, we met a cheeky peacock, who used to live a hotel that had closed. The peacock didn't require a pen and spent its days running around the compound eating bugs and raising its tail at every minor distraction.
But then! Leonides and peacock discovered each other. And low, there was much braying and many, many cries of "Owww! Owwww! Owwww!" Leonides and Peacock made the joint decision that this was the correct way in which to greet the dawn.
So every day, for the rest of my time in Greece, I woke at 5:00 am to "Eeeeee-ahhhhhh! Eeeeee-ahhhhh!" and "Owwww! Owwww!" which is significantly less atmospheric than you'd imagine.
100 words from a local
While in Athens and in the larger area of Attiki, stay away from the beaches (there are islands for that! Try Amorgos and Anafi ) and focus on sight-seeing (ancient monuments all around Sounio, Theisio, Monastiraki, Plaka). Use the metro, not taxis. Downtown Athens is excellent for drinks: go to Kolokotroni str. and to Karytsi square. For Greek cuisine at its best, visit the cities of Thessaloniki, Giannena (you’ll love the ambience of the lake) and Chania in Crete - you just can’t go wrong with food there. Hey, and don’t leave the country without paying a visit to the ancient theater of Epidaurus in Peloponnese…

I love Greece. Spent many months on Antiparos twenty five years ago! I am sure you paid that beautiful wee island a visit. Thanks for the nice memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a nice post on Greece!
ReplyDelete(I am proud my sister -Danai -has a contribution to it )
And of course I am now homesick...
I'm not a big traveler and don't have much interest in visiting most of the places you talk about on the blog (though I LOVE reading about them), but Greece is actually one of the few places I would LOVE to see in person. (Another one is Ireland.) My sister-in-law and I have discussed the possibility of ditching our kids and husbands one day and just spending a week there together. The reason it's "one day" and not "this summer" is only because I'm waiting until I move to Israel where the plane fares to Europe are MUCH cheaper than they are from the States.
ReplyDeletehey sarah! that last picture of all the gorgeous colourful buildings is actually from the cinque terre in italy! i spent a week there last summer and it was incredible!
ReplyDeleteI was involved in a boat sinking when I was in Greece with a man in his twenties who only went by "Cap"-I doubt he had earned the military distinction. (I'd post the link to my blog and be shamelessly self promoting but that seems wrong).
ReplyDeleteDid you go to Mykonos and see the huge bird Petros that is allowed into all the restaurants?
The donkey and peacock story just made me feel so happy for some reason. Aww!
ReplyDeleteSooooo wonderful. I really want to go there now. I'm completely filled with wanderlust. I used to never think much about travelling, but now I'm dying to see the world. Next week I'm going to Hawaii, which is the furthest I've traveled yet. I'm totally thrilled. Greece is so on my list now.
ReplyDeleteI just love reading about all of your travel tips and adventures! Growing up we didn't get to travel much, but I'm trying to really take advantage of my mostly-unattached current status (the boy will travel anywhere so he's not an issue) and see some sights. Granted, most have been in the states but we have plans to start doing some international exploring soon. Thanks for always inspiring me to do just that!
ReplyDeleteI want to go. Yep, I do. I have for a while now. This is like icing on my wanderlust cake! I am loving these mini guides!
ReplyDeleteLove this post Sarah! I went to Santorini in April while backpacking in Europe for a few weeks and definitely recommend going in the "off" season. This makes it easier to get cheaper accommodation and it is not crowded at all--the weather was still great too! I agree with the one too many honeymooners, but once you see the sunset in person it's totally worth putting up with PDA.
ReplyDeleteI would love to go to Greece someday soon. Thank you for your post, it was very helpful!
ReplyDeleteI'd kill to be there right now. :)
ReplyDeleteI never wanted to go to Greece until I read this post! Thank you now its on the travel list! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my. That sounds amazing. You just sold me... I think I need to go to Greece! Thanks for all the great tips, too! :)
ReplyDeleteThis has nothing to do with the post, but your arms look amazing in the top photo. Like a younger, hotter Michelle Obama.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think they're from hauling giant buckets of corn to the hawks at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital :)
ReplyDeleteIs that an octopus on the clothesline? What a picture!
ReplyDeleteThis is my top travel destination right now - it sounds amazing! I can't wait to go. thanks for posting these tips, I can't wait to try them out someday :D
ReplyDeleteAgain, you make me swoon! Another place I've always wanted to go (there seem to be a lot of them...). The fried halloumi description made me drool, and thinking about sunbathing topless even warmed my cold quasi-Canadian bones. Someday!
ReplyDeleteHow amazing. I've always loved Greek food and in college I had a professor from Greece so it made me want to go visit even more. Hopefully some day...
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to go and now I finally do (tomorrow!). I had to remember to come back and read your tips, thanks Sara!!
ReplyDeletep.s. I am practically packing in my purse for the 2 weeks trip :)

You should make sure to check your visa when entering Greece since their immigration policies are strict.
