As we've established, I am completely enamored with tiny living spaces and the idea of taking my home with me when I travel. Those turtles and snails and crabs! So clever! Though nothing can eclipse my love for travel trailers, houseboats come in a very close second. Let's swoon over these gorgeous vessels, shall we?
Berlin is my favorite city, ever, and I'd probably like it even
if I got to live there in this house boat. Apparently, this house
started its life as a barge!

They bought this boat for $16,000 before they remodeled it.

Garden on deck.
How gorgeous is this? Although at $239,000 is a bit
more than that barge.

You could do running cannonballs off of your bed into the water!
You know, hypothetically.
Dear owners, I am available to move in ASAP.
Clean, quiet, will blog in exchange for a bedroom.

Would you ever live in a houseboat? I'd love to rent one with a big group of friends for a long summer weekend!
I would love to. There's just something about them that fascinates me.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine lived on a canal boat for a summer. They even had a pet cat! There is an extensive canal network where I live (West Midlands, UK) and I really like the idea of taking a boating holiday :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to live on a house boat! I mean, all the cute factor of a cottage, without the pesky yard to take care of! And if you don't like the neighbours, just more a bit!
ReplyDeleteMy friends stayed on a houseboat in Amsterdam - sounded fantastic!
ReplyDeleteA friend and his relatives rented a houseboat.. All he could say was "NEVER again"... Guess the relatives got on each other's nerves...lol...As he said " not enough boat" lol....
ReplyDeleteI have seriously considered living permanently on a houseboat, but I can't afford it now... Maybe some day I will though! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy house (room) is soon (next friday, eek!) to be on a boat! starting work for the cruise line. The boat itself is excessive and large, but I'll be in a very small space for living. A little worried about the smallness of the space, but I am trying to remember the photos you've pulled of how living in small spaces can be great!
ReplyDeleteI love house boats. I went to Amsterdam back in May and I took so many pictures of the house boats in the canals! I love them! They are too cute!
ReplyDeleteOooh, did you know there's a hostel boat in Berlin, parked up right alongside remnants of the Berlin Wall. I stayed there a few years ago - not v glam but hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThere's also a houseboat moored up next to my apartment. I keep meaning to make friends with the owners, they always have the most awesome BBQs.
Kat, you just described my dream! Berlin + house boat hostel = WIN!
ReplyDeleteThis isn't a house boat, but you might like this video.
ReplyDeleteIt's about a guy who makes really tiny (90 square feet) houses.

I rent out a houseboat everytime I'm in Amsterdam. From here: http://houseboatapartments.com/
ReplyDeleteI would really recommend it if you need somewhere to stay.
It's so much fun waking up in the morning to ducks and swans on the canal off your deck <3
For several summers, I spent a week-ish on a houseboat on a lake in California and LOVED IT. None of them were quite as glamorous as these options; I have a feeling I might like that even better.
ReplyDeleteIf you *do* have the good fortune to spend time on a houseboat, be sure you jump off the roof, at least once. It's definitely worth it.
I couldn't do it. I get so motion-sick. I even got motion sickness on a CRUISE. Those things are supposed to be like gliding through butter!
ReplyDeleteMy mom and step dad live on a huge beautiful sail boat, and have for quite a few years now. They're leaving Alaska next spring to start sailing around the world! I love visiting home and staying on the boat, but it would definitely get old fast with more than two people!
ReplyDeleteI spent some time yesterday researching living on a houseboat! How timely your post was!
ReplyDeletesoooooooo obsessed with living on a houseboat! Also: the movie "Houseboat"- amazing. Get on that.
ReplyDeleteNext time we're in Britain, my family plans to go house boating for a week or two and travel around. It looks so amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to live on a boat! How amazing! My husband stayed for a week on a house boat on the Norfolk Broads (UK) and he loved it!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was really little, my family (+aunt/uncle+grandma) rented a houseboat for a week and floated around the Lake of the Ozarks. 9 people on a boat for a week.
ReplyDeleteI recall the adults being frustrated with always having to have someone drive. ...but my most vivid memory is my father swimming back from shore, pushing a little floaty-raft holding a bunch of beer on it, hahahaha.
House boats are cool! But have you heard about the family of 5 who lived on their tiny boat for 7 years and traveled around the world! I'm both in awe and jealous!

My family enjoyed a few weeks every summer on a houseboat and they were some of the best times of my life! Sleeping under the stars (why sleep inside when you can have a breeze and starlight overhead?), cooking on bbq (even food you wouldn't think you could bbq, heat is heat), and endless hours of water play...cannonballs included. I highly recommned you grab some friends and rent a boat for a week, it's a great time all around!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to live on a houseboat! It seems like it would be so freeing.
ReplyDeletehahahaha! I'm on a Boat! Good one. My teenagers go around singing that all the time at the moment. With the bleeps :) Back to topic. Gorgeous boat. Maybe for a weekender cos I still love to lie on some grass.

This post brought me out of my feverish funk,I sat straight up in bed and called to my Mr. "Look! Other people love house boats too!" I am seriously looking into buying a houseboat instead of a "regular" house in a year or two....and maybe a vintage airstream with a
ReplyDelete'55 Chevy contertible to pull it around for the "off" season...or a tree house!
Great post (as usual!)

I love the little house idea too--either on wheels or on the water works for me. But water... how peaceful!
