Does this ever happen to you? You're paddling around Blogworld and happen upon a widget/ amazing layout/photo with rounded edges and text on top of it and an embedded link and you get all "Omghow'dtheydooothat?! And why is my stuff all tiny and sub par and not awesome?!"And then you have to go eat half a bag of shredded cheese to calm yourself down?
I mean, you know, hypothetically.
This has happened to me innumerable times. When you find these things on Big Important Blogs it's a bit awkward to email the writer asking for a link to said widget. And it's oddly hard to google "combined rss facebook twitter widget for blog customizable color rounded corners."
So! I thought I'd share my three teaspoons of widget-related knowledge with you guys. I realize that many of you probably discovered these widgets and services in, like, 1996 but you never know, right?
Blog Relevant Tools
Picnik
This is a fantastic (free!) photo editing site. You don't have to register or download anything and you can crop, adjust saturation and exposure levels, round corners and put text on top - among many, many other things. This is actually how I put together mock-ups for my Karma Cards!
Big Huge Labs
If you were particularly impressed by the photo layouts over at Shoppe Yes, it's all thanks to the Big Huge Labs mosiac tool. They've also got great tools to make fake photobooth pictures, photo collages ala David Hockney and heaps of other great stuff.

8tracks
If you like the playlists that I've put together in the past (here's Spring-ful Songs, and here's Music to Grill By) you can make your own at 8tracks. You can even make private mixes to share with just your friends and upload cute cover art.
Polyvore
I'm sure this is crazy old news, but Polyvore enables you to make awesome, magazine-quality layouts with products you find in their archive or just about any product, anywhere online. It's equally good for fashion or interior layouts. Or, you know, Dr. Seuss-inspired fashion.
Is.gd
I literally just figured out URL shortening last week. Up until then I was shortening my messages to accomidate giant URLs. What?! Better yet, this service (just one of many) doesn't require any registration.
We Heart It and Vi.sualize
I think I've mentioned these sites approximately a million times before, but this is where I find 90% of my photos and probably 40% of my inspiration. Because the photos here have been bookmarked and favorited by other people, you get a gorgeously editted selection to choose from, all in JPEG format. Honestly, I much prefer We Heart It, but sometimes I us Vi.sualize when the other site is running slow.

Flickr Creative Commons
If you're creating a product and you need photos for it, you will very quickly discover how expensive it is to by rights to something. Perhaps your first born will cover the cost of one really nice photo. However! Flickr Creative Commons will save your ass! Gajillions of Flickr users have been kind enough to post their photos under the 'Creative Commons Attribution' license. which means that you can use (and alter) their photo as long as you credit them! Now you! What great blogging/editing/life-hack tools do you know about? And my question for you: where'd you get those cool combined twitter/facebook/rss buttons?

That is me ALL THE TIME. Glad to know somebody feels the same??? Hahaa.
Finally someone shares some secrets around here! Thanks! And how's the weather over there? I heard there were some tornadoes, so just making sure you're ok.
Again, LOVE these links!
Elle, yes there *were* tornadoes - but thankfully none of them touched down in the Twin Cities. The sky was yellow for a few hours, though!
Thanks. I have been looking for a simple graphics program for a while. Downloaded a few and they were crap but didn't want to get into something complex like photoshop.
Love Picnik!... they've added alot to their program and its so easy.
So many sweet tools! Can't wait to try out some photo editing in Picnik (never heard of it!) and Picasa (heard of, but have not tried it). Thanks much!
thanks for all the links. i just want to know where i can find a keyboard like that though... :)
stereomood is SO SO GOOD! thank you so much! i felt so happy after i found it i put chocolate syrup in my already chocolaty cereal :). I'm listening to "driving" to find songs for my end of high school roadtrip/beach day.
I want that keyboard too....well maybe not- I'd quickly eat through all the keys ;)
Don't know which buttons you're referring to exactly, but the ones I have a wordpress plugin "subscription options". Super easy :)
YES YES YES this is awesome thank you!
Love these tools! Also, the button thing is pretty easy...I'd be happy to help you/explain the process if you'd like, or even set 'em up for you! Take a peek at my blog and see if you like mine or show me an example of someones you do like and I'll help you out :)
Thank you!! I do that on websites and blogs ALL THE TIME and now I know some of their secrets...muwahaha. Thanks so much for posting all these great sites and tips!
wow! thank you so much for this... i'm going to go check these out.
I LOVE Picnik. I do all my photo editing with it - you can use the site or set up your flickr so you can edit and adjust right there. So easy and convenient!
Brilliant. They all seem like awesome sites. I've just been playing around with Picknik and love it so much. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing! I was quite pleased to see Gala Darling's shout-out to you and your awesome karma cards today :)
THANK YOU for this. I've been blogging in one form or another for 10 years and I didn't know half this stuff. I swear, sometimes it's like you read my mind.
Great list! Aviary.com is awesome if you want like the whole Photoshop/Illustrator/etc experience but can't afford it. Aviary is a web-based, completely free program that lets you do all that. I think it's pretty great, even though I'm still learning how to do things.
of the ones you listed, I really like weheartit and polyvore a lot! I really like the idea of 8tracks too.
As for sites I like...
well in terms of music, I love last fm, I've found so many awesome musicians that way.
I also like icheckmovies.com, you can find a bunch of films that way.
I'm a bookworm, so I like librarything.com
For inspiration, I often visit:
http://www.earthalbum.com/
http://ffffound.com/
http://www.booooooom.com/
Funny you should mention cool RSS widgets. Guess what I came across yesterday?
http://www.youthedesigner.com/2010/05/24/a-showcase-of-free-rss-icon-sets-for-bloggers/
Love your blog. You are sharing some great info. Ive been wonering about Big Cartel, thanks for the nudge.
Do you know about olioboard???? Make your own mood boards....super awesome. http://www.olioboard.com/
Decidedly more boring, but super useful: www.jobspice.com
you enter information into the boxes, the site does all the nasty formatting for you, and turns out a perfect-looking resume in a variety of styles! you can save your resume on the website as well as download a pdf for yourself. where was this when i was doing grad school applications???
GIMP and Paint.net are both free photo editing programs that are comparable to Photoshop (really, they're just as good :) ). GIMP also has a portable version that you can use on a flash drive, just look for it on Portableapps.com. T
They also have a free, portable vector program called Inkscape, which I used to help make the banner for my blog.
Sarah!
I have been reading your blog for ages, but I don't think I have ever commented. Bless my lurkery little soul.
I am so all over We Heart It and Visualise - I like pretty pictures for my blog too, but really battle to find good ones - and I didn't know about these cool places.
Now perhaps my blog can get prettied up to yes andyes standards...
Thank you for your *awesome* blog.
Ah! Thank you for posting all this, so helpful!! Unfortunately I have no cool widgets to post :( But all these are miiiiighty helpful.
Sarah Von, you are wonderful.
i love stereomood! my boyfriend turned me on to it, and i haven't used pandora since :)
my new fave general internet awesome thing? glass. it's still in beta, but already making my life more interesting
Ahhh you are alwasy such a wealth of knowledge! I was wondering if you knew any good programs to edit videos? xo
I'd never heard of Picnik, but it sounds just like what I've been looking for on the web. Thanks Sarah!
Sarah, I don't know how I can thank you enough for this post... I keep coming back to it all the time and, after having tried out Picnic... I'm just blissful! FINALLY I can make my photos look EXACTLY the way I want them to! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hi Sarah! This is a post I keep coming back to and I just checked back to find out about the deal with copyright while using images from weheartit or visualize on a blog. Could you let me know if we are supposed to reference the link?
Sri,
Here's what I do. Usually on weheartit or visualize, there's a link listed as 'original source.' I copy that link and embed that link in the photo. So then if someone clicks on the photo, hopefully they'll be taken to the place on the internet where it was originally posted. Hope that helps!
