Did you guys know that I worked in advertising for about three minutes before I gave in to my genetic destiny of teaching? It's true. I worked on things like press releases for a Michael Bolton concert and copy for a brochure about cemetery headstones.
So it's pretty much exactly like Mad Men.
But! My dalliance with the ad world gave me a hearty appreciation for a well made commercial. Have you heard of The British Television Advertising Awards? Oh, they are a few hours well spent. A few of my favorite winners?

A marionette pelvic thrusting to an early ninties dance hit?! Yes please!
You're totally surprised that I'd be into an ad featuring a singing sock monkey, right?
What would happen if a life-time nudist came home to find his wife and best friend, together, wearing - gasp - clothes!?
Appropriate? No. Related to clothing? Not really. Totally effing genius? Absolutely?
What ads do you love?

OMG! I LOVED that tynee tips ad when I was staying in the UK a year ago, it's fantastic!
Thank you so much for reposting it!
xoxoxo
The one with Clive Owen for Lancome. :D
that is so funny!!
crazy--i heard that phrase last night about selling ice to eskimos for the first time & i could not stop laughing and i was like "i MUST remember that for one day!"
life coincidences always make me smile. : )
xo-
My boyfriend absolutely loves those "free credit report dot com" commercials with the group of dudes singing, haha.
Ugh I work in advertising now & it's beyond horrorshow. Most of that has to do with a corrupt publication, but it makes my life Hell on ice every day.
However, I do love a good ad campaign. I think the American Express commercials where all the items are positioned to look sad & then new items appear to be smiling is absolutely genius. I couldn't tell you what the ad is about, but I could watch every day items smile all day!
That first one nearly made me die. It's mainly adverts that made me wish i had a telly. Ha.
Don't you think the Brit TV Ad Awards were a touch more depressing this year than last year? But I still loved the Barclay ad with the guy taking the water slide from his office to his house. Last year's winner of the gorilla drumming Peter Gabriel's "In the Air Tonight" is my all time favorite ad.
I think that last one is hilarious. One of the similar videos they show at the end is a longer version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3pXzpfqFxI&feature=player_embedded
I used to love that Boost mobile add with the guy singing Miss New Booty int he bathroom. It didn't make me get a phone, but I got the song off iTunes!
That Diesel one kills me every time, hahahaha
These are so great!
Here are some of my favorites that work in English too:

My favourite advert at the moment is the Weetabix steeplechase one:

drama, suspense and a cracking finish.
I am loving the new crop of FedEx Kinkos commercials. Especially the one where they test out all the luck idioms - throwing salt over your shoulder, knocking on wood, ending of course with the "leprechaun." Genius.
Hehehe I love these!
Sarah, you are clearly missing the greatest commercial of ALL TIME. EVER. It brings me joy, gives me hope, and generally makes the world a better place.
Plus it has a penguin.

I'm not sure if you ever had the proper thunderbirds in the US but the first ad with the marionette is a character called brains from thunderbirds
thunderbirds was an all puppet international rescue force show for children first shown in the 60s and then repeated in the 90s, everyone in the UK would get that this is Brains (obviously clever characters are the ones that wear glasses) so the finishing line makes more sense if you get that cultural reference
I love thunderbirds
That sock money one made me so happy. I got a huge smile on my face. Thank you.
Okay, I just watched the other ones too. And I loved them all. :D
