Did you guys go to prom? Are there wrist corsages and strapless bras and questionable up-dos in your past? I went with my high school sweetheart - he wore a tux with tails and a pair of converse all-stars. I wore a full-skirted Cinderella number with white Doc Martins and shaved the back of my head. Oh my.All of those layers of tulle don't come cheap though, do they? Many high school girls can't afford those expensive dresses, so why not donate your old prom and bridesmaid dresses? You'll free up space in your closet and help make someone's dream come true.
How to participate?
Have your dress dry cleaned. This usually costs $6 - 10 and dry cleaners are sometimes willing to do it for free if you explain that it's going to charity. If you can't get it dry cleaned - no worries! Send it along anyway.
By the end of February, box it up and mail it to:

What a fantastic project! Unfortunately all of my prom dresses and things are at my parents' home in Vegas, but next time I'm there, I'm going to clean out my childhood closet and find out how to donate things as effectively as possible!
This is such a great idea, are there any in the UK? I have far too many ball gowns and cocktail dresses that I'll never wear again!
For my Senior Prom, I wore a hot pink number covered in gorgeous beadwork & hotpink Chuck Taylor's. My date wore his tux with black Chucks. It was a fantastic time. I think I really will donate that dress. Really, it's taking up valuable closet space.
This is a great idea :)
If I didn't have another prom to go to this year I'd definitely send mine off. Only problem is, it's probably too kitsch (it actually does look like curtain material) for anyone to want it.
I teach at a rural school in southwest virginia and have many students who are unable to afford prom dresses, our school compiles a prom closet throughout the year (which i am donating six dresses to this year)
many schools all over the country do the same and a call to your local high school will quickly tell you if you can donate locally
i suggest this if someone is unable to mail there dress to the organization you mentioned
donating locally is always wonderful i believe!
I have two older sisters, and we each wore the same pink dress for our own prom. It's a little too sentimental to give away, even though I think this is a wonderful project.
Definitely will pass this on. I didn't go to prom (or any formal dances in high school) so don't have a prom dress to do this with. I do know people who do so the link does to them.
I will definitely be doing that this year. I have my yellow prom dress sitting in my parent's closet because I've considered turning it into a Daisy (from Mario) costume but I think this would be better. Thank you for posting the address!!
We have a pretty fun charity event in here in Columbus, OH, where people donate dresses, then a little "pop up shop" is put up and all the dresses are sold for $1 to girls who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them. The $$ ends up paying for the building costs for next year! It's fun!
Ohh, this is sweet! Whenever I see ads for things like this, I wish I could participate, but... well, my Mom made my prom dress, so it pretty much only fits me, & I'm a little too attached to it to give it away.
I keep waiting for somebody to invite me to a really formal party so I can wear it again! Or, you know, if I win that Tony, I can wear it to the awards ceremony...
Earlier this year I sent out this video to illustrate how the current administration is masquerading as a leadership team different from the previous one. The video documents how the choice between Democrat and Republican is really no choice at all. Recent history has confirmed the message of this video. Here we are almost a year after Bush left office and we see that really only the rhetoric has changed. The same program of economic, military, and civil rights disintegration remains in full effect. The sequel to this video is now available to shed more light on this false choice of governance. This sequel exposes: 1) how mega banks like Goldman Sachs created this financial crisis to then introduce their solution: a government hand-out of trillions of dollars to them; 2) how this same scheme is being set up again on a global scale through the development of a cap-and-trade derivatives market; 3) how Obama is simply managing this economic disintegration program that was furthered by Bush (and his predecessors) going back as far as Carter; 4) how Obama's actions have been just as unconstitutional as Bush's and how our country is being pushed deeper into an oppressive surveillance society. The sooner we acknowledge this false choice of governance we are given, the better the chances are that we can produce a real choice that represents us, not the institutionalized power structure pillaging us. If you would like to learn more about the timely issues raised in these videos please visit this alternative news website, where these videos were produced.
i wish i had them left; however, a few years back for a friends bachelorette we all got gussied in our horrible dresses, teased hair and aquanet fixed do's and went to town. We then did the same thing with our dresses...we donated them!! great idea, and i really hope that this goes somewhere!!

I'd like to write a shamelessly fangirlish comment:
I think you are amazing.
You inspire me.
The world is too short and vibrant
to not be present in its shortness and vibrance, and you do it so well. Cheers.
Winifred! You charmer! (blush)
What a lovely lovely idea. I didn't go to my high school prom, but even if I had, the dress would be eligible for a Smithsonian display. I will pass this idea on, however - thanks for sharing!
There is a group in Reno that does that too. I have been meaning to donate mine for awhile now, so maybe this post will be the reminder I need. Of course, they are 11 years old. I'm not sure anyone would like the styles anymore.
I sent the address to my mom -- my prom dresses are still in a closet at her house!
I wore a really beautiful periwinkle dress with a square neck (no strapless for me). It was awesome. My date was a douche I'd rather not think about, but at least I looked stunning. The dress is beautiful, but I'll never wear it again.
I also told my mom to send the very prom-looking bridesmaid dress a friend made me buy. That is strapless (not my thing at all) and will never be worn again.
thanks for posting this! they're both fairly old (5-10 years), but they are also both really classic styles, so I'm sure they'll get good use.
I wore a duct tape dress to my senior prom. Somehow, I don't think they'd be too keen on taking that one off my hands... ;)
Thanks for sharing, though, and I'll pass the word along!
I think programs like this are popping up all over - I've seen several in my area in the past few years. Just FYI in case anyone doesn't want to ship a dress across the country, there might be somewhere right down the road from you!
Thank you for writing this post, Sarah! :) You're the best! Love you long time!!! xo
Oh my gosh! My school is doing a dress drive (too bad we are far away from you, in Cary, NC)! Our drive is called Prom Take Two, so if you have any readers who are in NC and want to donate, they should! If you wanted (only if you feel so compelled to, sorry for my shameless begging), you could tell everyone that if they live in NC and have dresses or suits or shoes or anything formal or semi formal that is in relatively good condition, they should email me at claireashley31@gmail.com.
Just saying :)
I love your blog. You are amazing.
