True Story: one of my good friends spent the majority of his childhood convinced he was a horse. Not like, "periodically pretending he was a horse and galloping around the yard." No. Dude was convinced that he was not so much a human boy as he was a horse. So much so that his parents were neeeaaarly moved to get A Professional involved.
These days, Former Horse Boy is a PhD candidate and married to The Coolest Girl Ever. From this story, let us take the lesson that a little imagination never hurt anybody and that the more you imagine, the more awesome you will become.
That last lesson is probably backed up by scientific evidence. Somewhere.
When I was a kid (okay, 15) my girlfriends and I spent many a summer day re-creating that scene in The Little Mermaid where Ariel throws herself onto the rock, hollering about being part of your world. And like every other little book worm, I loved the Narnia books and the magical creatures that resided between those covers.

What fantastical creatures did you love as a child? Or, um, today?
(P.S. if you've got a few hours to spare check out wikipedia's list of legendary creatures! A huge magical eel! A fish-tailed goat! A giant turtle that supports that world! and that's just the letter A!)

Fauns, nymphs and centaurs in the earlier years of childhood. Vampires since then. I've always had a fascination with vampires, have read anything and everything about them - even Twilight :)
Great images BTW!
Um, Gremlins! I wanted gizmo to be real oh so very badly.
That's such a cute story! I'm absolutely obsessed with dragons - to the extent I'm considering doing a PhD on them! I have a tattoo of Smaug (from the Hobbit) on my back, as well as phoenix on my arm...Anything mythical and wing-ed wins me over. I would love to be a dragon!
xx
My favorite mythical creature is the griffin (part eagle, part lion) and I also love centaurs.
When I was in kindergarten, I told everyone from my teachers to my T-ball coach that my name was Ariel. I still see too many similarities between myself & the little mermaid to be normal.
I'd love to be a mythological creature.
I loved fantasy books and myths when I was younger. I read Edith Hamilton's Mythology at an early-ish age and inhaled books like the Hobbit and the Prydain series by Llyod Alexander. And I LOVED the Last Unicorn. My favourite creatures are dragons. I always loved how clever they were.
I knew there was a reason I like you. I mean, besides your awesomeness. My friends and I were also trying to recreate the mermaid thing this past summer. Am I embarrassed to admit that we were doing that as girls in our twenties? Never. I am all about the mermaids. If you figure out how to become one, let me know.
Day dreaming about mythical creaturs is such fun! In fact, Sunday morning entailed my husband and I pouring over facts if Sasquatch existed or not, over breakfest, while watching a show on the topic on Discovery.
I'm slightly disappointed the turtle you mentioned was the real one, and not Great A'Tuin.
I used to be completely fascinated by unicorns, then somewhere along the way bunnies took over. ^-^ Now I have a love of mermaids and fairies, and all magical creatures!
Unicorns are probably number one, though moogles do have a special place in my heart, as evidenced by the tattoo on my arm.
I love your pictures. My friends and I use to play in the pool and do the hair thing from the little mermaid. nice to know we're weren't the only ones. ;)
I love the horse story :) When I was little my friend and I used to put her blue lava lamp on and drape her room in greens and blues. We'd then pretend to be underwater, with the mermaids and sea creatures. Today, I'm absolutely obssessed with fae tales (Tolkien is my fav author), and I dream of waking up on a rainy morning and going off on an adventure like Bilbo...
For me dragons have been always number one, big or small, I don't care. But lately as I've become obsessed with R.A.Salvatore books I have to say that I absolutely love Pikel, the dwarf with green hair and beard, pot as a helmet, sandals in his feet and wants to be a druid, talking to animals and travelling through tree roots.... and I am amazed how the black elf Drizzt Do'Urden moves and fights and gives his all to his friends.. And after seeing LOTR-trilogy... awww, fell in love with Legolas. How come I'm not born elf?!?!
this has nothing to do with legendary animals...BUT...i did pick up a copy of Real Simple...and i love it! :)
"So much so that his parents were neeeaaarly moved to get A Professional involved." Did you mean for the word "nearly" to sound like a horse was saying it? Because that's how I took it, and it was awesome :) Totally with ya on Ariel. Oh hot tub of my childhood, how I miss thee.
Flying Eagles (that talk)- I even ended up putting them in my novel. Not too exciting!
I was absolutely in love with fairies. I thought I was one. There's a store in my town called Midnight Fairy and they do amazing birthday parties for kids (this is where I had my sweet sixteenth birthday party...) inside of a giant fake tree and it's just magical. I went to a party there when I was five and it cemented in my head until I was thirteen that fairies were real. I still kind of believe.
omg i love love love those photos - as for me, Mermaid all the way.
Remember those diving rings you could play with in the pool? You'd throw them into the pool, they'd sink, then you'd go dive in after them...Well we had this brilliant idea to put them around our feet and flounder around, pretending to be mermaids. It was pretty fun until you started to drown
Wait a minute, I'm 54 and I STILL believe I'm a horse! I gallop around after my own horses all the time - I have thick mane - but maybe seeing a vet instead of a doctor is going a step too far... ya think?
When I was little, I made a list of stuff I wanted to be when I grew up. Among the usual suspects, I had also written "nun" and "mermaid". I'm now an agnostic, but I hope that the mermaid thing can still come true. Even if I can't swim well and I'm scared of falling into the ocean. It can still happen!
Mermaid... always wanted to be one "when I grew up."
i had am imagineray friend
I desperately wanted Falkor from "The Neverending Story" to be real.
We grew up by the beach (among other places) and I used to spend hours on my knees in the shallows believing that I was a water queen and the waves that crashed were my minions. The white water as they curled over held so many faces and I always imagined them galloping like fierce water horses.
seriously, this is awesome!
Unicorns! I was horse mad (still am) and unicorns were another level in my world! I used to read the secret unicorn and really hoped there was some truth to it and my riding school pony was actually a unicorn in disguise.
Definitely horses, and still today, horses.
