The Best Book Ever (That Was Written By One of My Friends)

I am lucky enough to count Winona, of Daddylikey fame, as a friend of mine. Like 'we send each other cards in the mail' friends. So, ya'know, pretty serious. And here is how our friendship developed:

1) I left a comment on her blog about how I was pretty sure I could recreate some fancy underwear she featured with a pink sharpie.
2) Sensing my rapier sharp wit based on that comment, she read my blog and we started a correspondence. Kind of like Albert Einstein and Teddy Roosevelt's letters, only with more references to kicky berets.
3) We met in Chicago! And she is just as awesome in real life as you would imagine! All funny and smart and full of good ideas.
4) I read her book. Is it possible I could love this woman any more? Winona, are you and Nick interested in opening up your relationship to include a third? Really! I'm very clean and I don't hog the covers! (Will have to discuss this with my Gentleman Caller.)

And you know what? Even if you haven't ever met Winona, you need this book. It's written the same helpful, friendly, incredibly funny tone as her blog and filled to the brim with useful information. Finding the right jeans! How to pick shapewear! Which shoes work with which pants! She even has a chapter on travel fashion (a topic I like to think I'm something of an expert on) and I can give that girl props for covering all her bases.

Wouldn't you like to join the fun? We're giving away a copy to one lucky reader. Just leave a comment telling us about your favorite accessory! (Mine's a pink and black sarong that I take with me whenever I travel)

Good luck!

Daddy Likey is a dangerous blog for me to read, I can't afford to shop as much as it makes me want to!

I think my favourite accessory is probably my silver charm bracelet. I started collecting charms last year and I'm hoping that as I collect more it'll become almost like a diary, or a catalogue of my interests, as well as a pretty piece of jewellery!

My favourite accessory is actually something I've just bought! It's a black fedora hat I found in the men's section of Zara. It goes with everything and makes me feel edgy yet laid back. This book sounds so lovely! :D

My favorite accessory is a ring (you can see it here http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v155/Leia9/IMG_0846.jpg). It's in the shape of a dolphin and holds a special place in my heart because a special someone gave it to me! I wear it every day. I love the fact that it is understated, unlike some of my massive cocktail rings, and goes with all of my outfits. Besides, sentimental value just makes something even better, doesn't it? :D

I make accessories for a living and you're going to make me choose a favourite?! Meany.

But in reality it's my red nike high tops that I love most at the moment. Either those or my tattoo. Can I count that as an accessory?

My favorite accessory right now is a cool filigree ring (with an adorable little flower on it) that my boyfriend bought me from Etsy. I had told him I loved it, and I was really surprised he picked it up for me, being broke college students and all. I wear it almost every day now :)

This is really sad but my favorite accessory is my sunglasses (I know that's not S-V agreement), which are usually perched on my head, even when it's not sunny out because they help keep my hair under control and I'm obviously so in need of this book I will probably have to buy it if I don't win a free copy.

My favourite accessory is a pearl ring that was my mothers til she gave it to me. I like jewelry with a bit of history.

Great giveaway Miss Von. Loving the idea of winning a book and snuggling up on the sofa with it and a steaming mug of hot chocolate.

Favourite accessory? hmmmm... probably has to be my giant silver flower ring. It adds 'a little something' every time I wear it.

I've been reading (and loving) your blog for a few weeks now, your travel tips rock. Very inspiring. I took the trans siberian last year from finland to beijing so if you want any hints or advice let me know! Oh and my favourite accessory has to be my squid hat I made for halloween.

Looks like a really nice book. I love the illustrations.

My fave accessory right now is a yellow flower hair pin. (I in a yellow-loving crazy phase).

Sarah Von said...

Abu: Yes! I *do* want to know about the trans-siberian! I didn't even know it went all the way to Finland. It'll probably be a good 6 - 8 months before I've got enough money saved for another world ticket, but when I do? Watch out, world!

I didn't follow Daddy Likey for awhile even though I found her hilarious because there were issues with the layout displaying on my Mac, but it was either fixed or is just not apparent through an RSS feeder, hooray!

My current favorite accessory is my silver zebra patterned scarf that I got on sale from Express for a holiday party last year. It's become my go-to scarf as the weather's gotten colder because all my usual winter scarves are packed away somewhere as I wait to move out from my parents' into a new apt, but it's plain enough to go with anything and yet with just a good amount of interesting-ness to it!

My favorite accessory is a pink metal cuff bracelet I got in London a couple years ago. It's a little edgy and a little delicate, and it reminds me of a great time of my life (a friend and I rather spontaneously decided to follow our favorite band on tour across the UK, and London was our last stop).

Chrissy said...

In the winter, my favorite accessory is a scarf that my good friend knitted for me last year. My office is always freezing, so I tend to wear it all day long.

I absolutely love Daddy Likely! Sometimes I skip over what people write to look at the pictures, but I always, without fail, read what she writes.

I think my favourite accessory is my faux pearl and chain necklace. I wear it far too often, but it goes with absolutely everything.

I love your blog (and now Daddylikey as well) and I'd love a good book, so here it goes.

My favorite accessory these days is my vintage pocket watch that I randomly found in a bag of jewelery. I added a glorious ribbon and tied it to the strap of my handbag for easy stylish access to the time. I don't go anywhere without it!

Long live your blog!

Oooo tough one to answer... but I will have to go with my giant ring featuring a porcupine under a dome of clear plastic (not a whole real porcupine... just a picture of one.) I love it because it captures my personality perfectly.... cute... but a little but prickly and dangerous.

My favorite accessory is my grandmother's pearl necklace. She gave it to me on my 18th birthday, and I wear it as often as I can.
I love it because I can pair it with dark rinse jeans, a nice blouse and cute flats or with my favorite little black dress.
Every girl needs some pearls in her life!

(Also Winona's "Don't Show-cha you Chocha" is freaking hilarious!)

My favourite accessory is a string necklace I bought in northern-ish Peru three years ago (in a village called Celendin, near Cajamarca -- I don't know if you went there during your trip?) ; it's black & teal & yellow & perfect, I wear it as a bracelet almost everyday. It snakes up my wrist in just the right way! :)

I'm with Vixel - Daddylikey makes me want to shop and shop and shop!

Favorite accessory is a ring I bought shortly after my separation after a 10 year relationship with my alcoholic now ex-husband. It says "The Journey Is The Reward" in script. I wear it on my left pointer finger. It's a super awesome reminder to stay present and mindful event when life is wacky and hard.

Congrats to Winona on her book.

I think my favourite accessory is my giant black circle scarf. It is many things, scarf (obviously), hood, pillow, skirt, shawl, hammock for cats and very, very occasionally it is the accidental hijab. I love it in all it's forms.

Congrats to Winona! And you Sarah, for scoring such an awesome friend.

I can't wait to check this book out (hopefully I'll win it, but if not, I'm buying!).

My favorite accessory would be wearing boots. I have several pairs and I'm always on the hunt for more. I think you could be wearing a clown outfit and boots would make it not only ok, but totally saucy.

Harriet said...

Probably my giant bow headband! It's roughly the size of half my head and makes me look like mini mouse, what more could I want?

Renai said...

Mine is my tiny little silver heart necklace that I have worn every day for more than four years. It's on a cheap cheap chain and was something that I got for free- but I always always wear it and would feel completely naked without it!

I'm a recent lover of your site (Found you via Galadarling.com)and I love it! Daddylikey is awesome as well, I dig the haikus.

My favorite accessory is my grandmother's ring. She wore it everyday and left it to me when she passed away. She got it on an Indian reservation some time in the 40's. It is silver with circular jade and red stones on the right and an engraved feather on the left. When you turn it sideways it looks like a smiley face! It is actually pretty ugly, but I love it because it reminds me of my Mom-mom!

LOVE Daddy Likey! Winona cracks me up!

My favorite accessory is a cheapie thick headband covered in a bright, almost 1960's style, floral fabric. I'm wearing it as I type, actually...

Whoa! I'm so curious to read this book! So I hope I win!

Hm... let's see... my favorite accessory... I guess it would have to be the one that I rarely take off now... my original Cape Cod Screwball bracelet that I got on the Cape this past summer with one of my oldest friends. It's simple and gold and silver, so it matches whatever I decide to wear. I can't wait to go back next year to get the matching necklace!

I so desperately need this book!

I think my favourite accessory would have to be my purple deLux hat, which has enabled me to not look like a total slob all the mornings where I didn't have time to wash my hair!

Also Sarah, I started reading your blog because I saw your sidenote about all the things you were going to do before your 31st birthday on Aug 29th. I turned 31 on Aug 29th! I've never met anyone with the same bday as me before. So clearly, I should get the book. Have I mentioned I also have a subscription to the New Yorker? ;)

Oh gosh it's so hard to choose! I would have to go with a leather wrist cuff-type thing I acquired over the summer- it's an olive green suede with brown ostrich leather detailing, a big black ghost obsidian stone in the middle, and it does up with a beautiful hand-made bead (which is apparently from South Africa!) It also came with free lemon cucumbers, and who could say no to that? :)

Love Daddy Likey. Hilarious commentary and fun posts to read.

My favourite accessory is my engagement ring. It's a beautiful diamond with two pear cut rubies in a simple setting. Goes well with everything and it helps that red's my favourite colour.

My favorite accesory? A bright-red bag or rather satchel which I use mostly for carrying books and other accesories that are more or less indispensable objects for a college girl - like pens or my mini stapler (The mini stapler actually is my other favorite object - it's bright orange and always could come in handy).

But back to the red bag - the best thing is how I got it:
It used to belong to a friend. One day I meet her carrying it. I complemented her and was just about to ask her where she bought it(I was on the lookout for a satchel but none would suit me.Or, rather those that suited me didn't suit my wallet). And then, to my delighted surprise, my friend said the magic words - "I'm actually getting rid of it.Do you want it?". As it turned out, she turned radically animal-friendly, vegetarian etc and decided to get rid of all her leather stuff. Well, I'm not the one who wears furs or leather pants but this satchel was calling out for me to find a new home... and I paid 50zlotys for it. Check how many $ it is and you'll know what I mean. Can you guess where I'm from?

I think my favorite (and most necessary) accessory is my little silver pendant with a snake on the front and my penicillin allergy info on the back! After I got deathly ill my freshman year and found out I would need to wear a med-alert pendant for pretty much ever after my mom and I decided to find the prettiest one we could. Its a little silver rectangle and so many people notice and comment on it (its a man catcher!). Most people ask if the symbol means I want to be a doctor which leads to my explanation of the allergy and much friendship making.

Don't you love it when you build awesome friendships through blogging. I've met some amazing ladies this way.

My favorite accessory is a Maiden Ring, basically a smaller, cheaper, less extravagant version of my parents' wedding rings. Each of my siblings got one when they 'grew up', and the idea is to wear them until you replace them with a wedding ring.

I wear mine every day.

Definitely my Scrabble earrings. They are made out of A tiles (A for Adele of course) and they get two or three positive comments every time I wear them. Of course, they get some strange looks as well, but some people just don't get cool stuff I say!

I think my favorite accessory is this brassy gold beaded cuff bracelet that a girl gave me in Brazil. It's classy but unique, goes with everything, it's light, it fits my small wrist perfectly and for all these reasons I wear it all the time.

I've met some people through the internet too -- and some I still have never formally met in real life, but I have a feeling that would only serve to make things better! This also includes one boy in particular :P

My favorite accessory is this watch necklace I got in London. Yes, you read that right, a necklace that is also a watch. Better still it is in the shape of an elephant. The elephant looks like it is carrying something on its back, and when you flip this part of it up, the clock is inside. I wish I had a picture of it to attach to this, because I imagine it might be hard to picture. Anywho, I got it at Piccadilly Market when I was in London about two years ago. For only 10 pounds actually, quite a steal. I was having a rough time of it that year, but this trip to London (my first time outside of the US or Canada!) was a bright spot. I sort of used this necklace for the rest of the year, wearing it whenever I felt down to remind me of the great time I had, to cheer me back up. It's still the one piece of jewelry that I wear most often.

Also, this is my first time posting on here, and I just wanted to say that I think you (and Winona!) are fab. First two in my blogs bookmark folder haha. Thanks for all your great articles. Can't wait to read more.

Oooh, hard question. While I have many favorite accesories, if I had to pick only one, it would be my red leather Morelle bag that I received for my graduation. It can fit everything I need and it's absolutely gorgeous. I love it when practicality and style go hand in hand.

My absolute favorite is an ivory lace shawl from the 1920's. I bought while browsing a vintage store with my mom in Cleveland the summer I left for college, and I wear it with everything, from jeans to formal dresses, as a proper shawl or looped around my neck with the fringe hanging down my front. It's got a few holes and the fringe is quite tangled, but it's beautiful and makes me feel completely elegant even if I have Chuck Taylors on my feet.

My favorite accessory is either this huge and deliciously tacky black rose cocktail ring that I thrifted, or a cloche that I crocheted. It's blue with a black band & a sewn-on ribbon bow at the band, with a little Day of the Dead skull in the bow. I get a ridiculous amount of compliments every time I wear it. Plus, you know, it covers my bedhead.
