I was up at the Von Family homestead last weekend, eating peanut butter cookies, looking at the leaves and drinking entirely too much coffee with the 'rents. Sunday morning was overcast and gloomy, which is - in my mind - perfect weather for eating oatmeal and looking through old family photos.
Now, most of our family photos are of the patterned sweater, gray/blue background variety. They're not quite good enough to be submitted to Awkward Family Photos, unless you consider my combination of triangle perm, wonky teeth and giant glasses awkward. Which I certainly didn't. But looking through all those photos? They got me thinking about what a cool family photo would look like. Here are a few that I found through my travels around the interwebz - links embedded in the photos.

I love the goth one, I didn't even notice the kid hanging upside down until I did a double take! My worst family pic was when I was still in college and my parents took us to Sears with my cousins' families while we were on Christmas vacation (already more embarrassing than the photo itself). My whole family looked like aliens. Every time my mom would set the photo out to display, I would hide it-but she always found it and put it back!

There are really sweet photos of me and my brother when we're younger, looking like little angels, except that we used to stay still long enough for a cute snap, then get back to beating each other up. Ah, family.
I have a gift certificate for a family portrait- but we want to do something cool and not too-cheesetastic, these are good inspiration.

I have a family picture that was taken in our living room next to the fire place when I was about 4. I wouldnt smile so my Dad bribed me with a dollar so the photographer could get a good shot. We still have that picture somewhere and I am cheesily smiliing with a dollar in my hand and a full head of frizzy curls. Its amazing, it still makes me laugh.
I am so doing this with my family! How do you think of these things!?

Wowser, the first picture gives me hope for the future. My family is well overdue for some shots to be taken and I only hope they can be that original and indicative of the fun we have together. I might have to get craftin' on some fake moustaches...
As for the goth family - genius.
Not formal ones but since I always have a camera on me I take every chance I can to do one because you never know when you can again.
I got one when my grandmother and aunt and cousin came to visit. (think we look alike ha)
