With my up-coming, milestone birthday, I've found myself thinking a lot about what it means to be an woman. I mean, like, a real grown up lady. I don't mean woman in the support-top pantyhose, minivan, white wine spritzer sense of the word. I'm talking about being a female who is in possession of all the knowledge, skills and paraphernalia that she needs to make her way in the world. Here's what I want in my proverbial toolkit:
- The Perfect little black dress - Perfect for weddings, cocktail parties, graduations, walking on the beach after any of the above with the cutie you just met
- Shoes that cost more than a $100 - Preferably, they will work with the perfect little black dress, your favorite jeans and that vintage pencil skirt
- A passport - For globetrotting and impromptu tequila runs. Or maple syrup runs.
- A toolkit - Because you can only hammer nails with the soles of your shoes for so long before it's embarassing.
- An electric drill - For book shelf hanging, hanging lamps, drilling a hole into your neighbor's apartment for better snooping. Wait. What?
- A vibrator - Samantha Jones would be disappointed in any modern girl without one.
- A gorgeous piece of jewelry you bought for yourself - it doesn't have to be expensive, it just needs to thrill you.
- A set of professional photos in which you look amazing - Because we don't usually get cuter as we age. Capture the hotness now!
- A hardcover set of your favorite books - I'm working on an Anne of Green Gables Collection and all the Kurt Vonnegut Books.
- An engraved flask - Mine will read Ms. Von and be filled with Suntory whiskey. What about you?
- A fantastic matching bra and panty set - you can wear it under you U of M sweats and feel smug and secretly sexy.
- A really good set of luggage - I'm counting my REI backpack. But LV roll-y suitcases work, too.
- A bank account with enough money for a cushion - in this economy, it just makes sense, eh?
- Skincare products that you love - it's easy to rock Schmoopy Style and hide your affinity for cheese, but you can't hide your affinity for sun bathing sans sunscreen.
- A Moleskin - for lists. Duh.
But surely there must be lots of other things that a grown-up girl should have in her arsonal. What do you think? What things should every woman own?

Oh my God, what a great post, I was just thinking about something similar last night. You have definitely got the essentials on that list but can I add:
A foolproof recipe for dinner au deux?
Is it sad that I want to have the HP series in hardback? And my hip flask would be filled with Jiegermeister and would just say 'M' in pretty script.
Perfect list! I love it. I'm going to get started on completing it before my 21st!
Yes, excellent indeed. And I'm totally on board with the pro photos, because I was thinking about this exact thing the other day when I was looking at a portrait of my grandma when she was young. I mean, ladies used to do that all the time! I say we bring back the attractive portrait tradition.
Great post! I second the passport! That's a must-have.
I would add...your own stereo system and speakers. Music is such a fabulous part of life and we don't need to leave the fancy electronics to the guys.
I love the "Ms. Von" flask idea--totally badass!
Moleskine? Yes, yes, and yes! The passport one is great. Also needed: A great passport cover so when you whip it out at Passport Control, you have an air of sophistication.
Quite a good list, but my opinion of the Moleskine is perfectly described here:

What a GREAT list!
Good point on the electric drill/tool kit they are SO important! I've definitely been caught using my shoes or any hard object in the vicinity haha.
I would add... a fun hat to the mix!

All good things, but i'm also going to vote for one really nice coat (usually a trench) that can be worn with almost anything (and which lasts for years...).
Love the lists,

Ooh, I love your list! I think a purse big enough to carry a book, a notebook, daily planner, a pen and/or pencil, makeup for touchups (like lipgloss, or powder, whatever), iPod and/or cell phone. Yeah, I carry my life in my bag, what of it? haha.
Genius hon. It's not an object but a good hair cut. One that suits you, not the chick in the magazine. Shall we add hairdresser then too? x
dude, ladies need a Best Lady Friend...you know the honest one, who is caring, funny, intelligent, likes things that impress you, who wants to do fun adventures with you and make you better? and is also willing to sit on the sofa and watch crappy tv with you sometimes, too? ;) love this post.
I would like to add a good sun hat, and a pocket knife, just don't take it to the airport.
Fabulous list - pleased to say I already have nine of those things. But I love the hardcover copies of your favorite books idea!
--xo.
Word word word! I love the idea of hardcover sets, that's awesome. How naive that, at first, I thought you meant a coffee flask! ;)
Oh my gosh, great list! And the vibrator made me giggle.
Really adore this post! I have yet to find the perfect LBD.
You have so many great post ideas! Tis is another gem!
I agree with everything!
Especially the hard-cover books. I can't even think of anything to add.
I love this list...and am a bit behind...no good. I only have 8. Gotta work that out.
Great list! I do hvae a few of those things already, which makes me quite happy!
I suggest a companion list with several skills needed to be a grown-up lady. Such as the ability to make at least one or two dishes (appetizer, dessert, whatever) that will wow guests, and the ability to plan a vacation to another city yourself.
Even if you don't frequently wear make up, you should have a basic understand of how to apply two looks: something business casual, and something formal. I don't care what you go for, but learn how to apply those two looks well, so that when you realize that you have been invited to a huge evening party that starts in very little time, and you haven't asked anyone to do your make up, you know what to do.
hey Ms.VON, you rock! Another one to share to all my wonderful girlfriends!
fun list!
#8 is so samantha, too!
#9 -- bought 2 of my favorite books (Pride & Prejudice, Wuthering Heights) in hardcover recently, from Penguin books.
#13 -- currently saving
