A new year means new opportunities for party-throwing, right? I mean that's what I always think of as I turn a new page in the calender: "Hmmmm, I think it's time for our annual ugly sweater party."
I am huge, huge fan of theme parties. Because everything's better when you're wearing a costume and listening to costume-related music right? Here are a few of my favorites:
1. Famous Mustaches Throughout History
Mustaches are to the 00s what goatees were to the 90s, and why not celebrate their popularity with party? Your guests can come clad as their favorite mustache owner and you can even served themed food! We threw a party like this for our housewarming in Wellington, New Zealand - I was a Frenchman and The Mister was Charlie from Lost. Which is to say he made his hair greasy, parted it unflatteringly and wrapped bits of paper towel around his fingers.
Possible Costumes: Dali, Frida Kahlo, Magnum PI, Hulk Hogan
Food: mustache cupcakes, gummy mustaches (apparently sarsaparilla flavored?) milkshakes (increases likelihood of milk mustaches)
Music: Frank Zappa, Gogol Bordello, The Killers, Queen

Oh, we've come so far from our fantasies of old, haven't we? I'm not tall enough to be a ballerina, or math-tastic enough to be an architect but we could surely overlook these realities for one night. Imagine a party stuffed with people dressed in their childhood dreams, noshing on the food of 1987. Awesome, yes? A friend of mine attended one of these parties dressed as a StarWars trooper. !?
Possible Costumes: singer, veterinarian, pro basketball player, um, tiger?
Food: Cheesy Poofs, Big League Chew, Kool aid, popsicles
Music: New Kids on the Block, Bon Jovi, The Bangles, anything circa Elementary School

Warning: this party is best for those who are single/under 25. It might just be embarrassing for us old fogies. The theme here is pretty straight forward, everybody arrives at the party in ensembles made up of pieces of clothing in the different colors of the Rubik's cube squares - you know, red hoodie, blue t-shirt, green skirt, yellow tights. During the course of the evening the goal is to switch clothes with your buddies to assemble an outfit that's monochromatic. I imagine this switching of clothing might be accompanied by some making out and flashing of underwear. Maybe.
Possible Costumes: solid-colored clothing of your choice in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and white
Food: jello shots, nibs, cheddar cheese cubes, those square Japanese watermelons
Music: Ice Cube (HA!)

Dress Like Your Parents Party
Oooh, this is a good one you guys. Though the 'rents are dear to us all, perhaps their fashion choices and ours differ on occasion? An applique sweatshirt here, a pair of SAS shoes there and you've got the makings of a great party. I'm afraid I also threw one of these parties, and the results? They weren't pretty.
Possible Costumes: Cosby sweaters, elastic-waisted pants, sensible pumps
Food: pigs in a blanket, Miller lite, raw veggies with dip
Music: Journey, Dire Straits, Cher
What's the best theme party that you've been to lately?

i am a huge fan of the moustache party. especially those cupcakes. i just spent a semester in france, and my friend's host dad had the most impressively bushy moustache i have ever seen. when he talked, you couldn't see his mouth, but his moustache was very animated.
I'm not sure that I could top the mustache party, but the 70's and 80's party I attended a few years ago was pretty kick ass!
I think I am slightly too old (and way too un-single) to take part in a rubik's cube party. But man! I wish I had thought of that when I was still in college!
I want so badly to go to #1 and #2! I have been to a James Bond themed party and a party brought to you by the letter T (it was a birthday party for a friend with initials T.T. and she was twenty two - another friend and I went as a Twister board and spinner).
Those are GOOD ideas. Must same them. Another one I love is 'tube stations' - which is particularly fantastic in London what with 'Angel' and 'King's Cross' etc
Great ideas! I had a theme party once, it involved dressing up as your favorite celebrity and we put down a red carpet and everything... it was so much fun! I was SJP btw ;)
I want a gummy mustache!
In high school, some kid had a "B" party, just like what Erin described. This was usually the time when girls got a chance to dress up all "risque". Well a really awesome girl I knew dressed up as a bag. A trash bag.
Kooky theme parties are the best :)
Your dress like your parents party music selection is pretty dead on. My father is OBSESSED with the Dire Straits...
My hubs could solve a Rubik's cube in under 30 seconds in college, and when I first saw that, I instantly knew that Rubik's cubes could be sexy. So right on!
Sadly, I can't remember the last themed party I went to.
I went to a stinky cheese party that was a lot of fun. Obviously, you bring a stinky cheese and there is wine. So how bad could it be?
These are such fun theme party ideas, I particularly love the Rubik's cube and what I wanted to be when I grew up ones :) haha so clever! i love 80s theme parties myself...and once I went to one themed "bright and tight" lame leggings, heyyyy! haha!
Mmmm...i think it's a riff on the Dress Like Your Parents Party but there was a odd theme party I went to last year themed Grandma and Grandpa on Crack.
But maybe this year I'll be lucky enough to be invited to a Yes Man style 300 party.
I basically won't GO to a party if it doesn't have a theme. You think I'm kidding.
Great ideas! Sorry it is taking me so long to answer the interview questions, it has been a crazy week. I will get back to you soon.
And you have been tagged! :D Details on the blog.
A xx
The Rubik's cube idea is AWESOME.
hahaha these party ideas are hysterical. dress like your parents is my favorite!
I am so disappointed that I didn't know about the rubik's cube party in college.
The parents party is a killer idea!! We did Rockstar for my bday last week, not a famous rock star but what you would wear if you were were a rockstar. I really liked the added fun of a theme party, it's my new plan to always have a theme.
oh i would LOVE to be invited to a mustache party! never liked themed parties but a mustache aprty might just be the one that would win me over.
Yay1 I love clever parties. that photo is so cute.
I love that picture. Nice ideas.
Please invite me to each one of these parties.
I do love these ideas, they're much more fun than alphabet dressups and boring themes like Hollywood. If only an occasion would come up!

We had a party last year which had the theme "Dress like it is/and you are from 1985 and are invited to a party whose theme is the Year 2001".
It took a little explaining but it worked out in the end.
1985 humans thought the year 2001 was going to be INSANE!
