Things I love Thursday

Our new place!
And when I say 'our' what I really mean is "The Mister's." The extent of my involvement with the purchase of this duplex was to coo over its blue door, widen my eyes and swoon "Oh Darling! It's simply adorable! We must have it!" The top half is rented out to a lovely couple and we have the bottom half. In a perfect world, we'll rent it out when we travel and coordinate our return with the end of someone's lease. I'm nearly giddy over opportunities to shovel our very own sidewalk and landscape things.

I'm also giddy about no longer living in a 'garden apartment.' And in case you're wondering, 'garden apartment' is euphemism for 'apartment with radiators on the ceiling and windows placed against the ceiling in an attempt to disguise the fact you're really living in the basement."

Cheese tasting party
When my DNA was converging in my mother's womb, the place where my appendix was supposed to be was replaced with a love for cheese. Seriously. Who needs chocolate and ice cream when you can eat hardened dairy products? To commemorate this love, I invited some friends over for a cheese tasting party. I rounded up heaps of obscure cheeses and we all split into pairs, tasted the cheeses and tried to match the unlabeled cheeses to written descriptions. The pair with the most correct matches won a prize!

And because I'm a dick, that prize was a can of squeeze cheese.

Our School's Christmas Party
I love my students so hard, right? And nearly every day I have to stifle the urge to laugh/weep over their antics and lives and comments. Highlights (and weeping opportunities) of our Christmas party included: the students singing Silent Night in Hmong, then KaRen, then English, receiving my very own KaRen shirt as a gift from the students and meeting my students' delicious, tiny children.

But wait! Do you have your kleenex ready? Because our lovely, hard-working, new-to-the-country refugee students ended the party by singing 'This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land.'

Totally tearing up a bit as I type that. What a baaaaaby!

Extra Credit
Spicy Sweet Potato Soup, this song, car dancing and looking in the rearview mirror to see the person behind me car dancing to the same song, upcoming ugly sweater paries to which I fully intend to bring a cheeseball, our list-centric blog, ice fishing with my dad, snowshoeing through the woods, lovely tow truck drivers who try to give you a break, serendipitous sub-letters, this website and being featured on Daddy Likey's Blogback Mountain!

What floating your boat these days?

Your new place sounds lovely and cheese-tasting parties are the best! I go to food festivals whenever I can and spend most of the time wandering around trying all the cheese samples!

ps. that carmel cheese was the best, next time, that should be the prize.

Congratulatons on your lovely new duplex. Very exciting.

And, the cheese party sounds wonderful---except the prize.;-) I too love cheese in a way that often causes me to make little sighing noises when I am at Whole Foods. That said, chocolate and ice cream do play their party in my imbalanced diet.;-)

Your love for your students is so very dear. They are lucky to have you.

If only your duplex was the house from the postage stamp. I am really happy for you! Me and "the mister" are still shelling out way too much for our 2nd floor of a triple decker.

If you love cheese, you've got to try this wasabi cheese I found at, of all places, Costco! I'm sure you could find it at a cheese shop too. So Yummy!!!

I need your spicy sweet potato soup recipe! I love me some sweet potatos.

And 1000 awesome things is just so darn awesome. I nod and giggle to myself whenever I read it!

Love this thursday post :)

Where is this charming new abode, Sarah Von? What 'hood do you now call home?

Brooke: That sounds fantastic! I generally love anything involving wasabi! The (really good) recipe I use for spicy sweet potato soup is here: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Spicy-Sweet-Potato-and-Coconut-Soup/Detail.aspx. It is so good we've taken to making it in bulk!

Sal: We're in Bryn Mar, two blocks down from the park. Which is a lot nicer than being two blocks down from Nicollet.
