photo by artisanWe all love Sufjan Stevens, right? Of course we do. He's a delicate, silver-throated minstrel who writes songs about Decatur, Iowa and lovely young girls with incurable diseases. What's not to love? So you just might enjoy this great story via my pseudo-brother-in-law who attended Hope College with the esteemed Mr. Stevens.
The PBIL and Sufjan ran in the same social circle and often turned up at the same parties. And because they are both dirty hippies, these parties would often devolve into candle-lit circles of friends, passing around a guitar and singing, you know, kumbaya and the like.
After a few drinks and several rounds of 'No Woman, No Cry', the guitar finally arrived in the eager hands of our hero. Convinced that sitting Indian style on the floor would not give his song the impact that he was looking for, Sufjan stood up and draped someone's cast-off toga sheet over his head.
And in the midst of his song, mid-trill, mid-eye-closing-for-effect, Sufjan's dramatic head cape made contact with those aforementioned candles and burst into flame.
What is the moral of the story? If you can't stand the heat, don't wrap your head in a sheet.

I totally want to run in SS's circles!! I would even get a disease or become a serial killer so he would write a song about me.
I know! If my Pseduo-Brother-in-law is any indication, SS runs in circles of funny, ultimate frisbee playing, beard owners. But then, don't we all want to run in circles like that? :D
I have never seen a picture of him before! But somehow I always imagined him dark-haired and fair-eyed. It makes my crush on him so much more palpable.
HAH! This story totally made my day. As stories in which people pulling ridiculous stunts burst into flame often do.
Ah Sufjan, not only do I love the alliteration of your name and your knack for writing beautiful songs covering the most bizarre topics, but now that I know you have the power to spontaneously combust, I love you even more!
My brother loves SS's music. He also runs in the correct circles to get hang-out time with him when SS is in Seattle.
This story is amusing because of that.
LOL, thank you so much for sharing :)
Snap and Print, you'll have to pass this story along to your brother.
Maybe it'll give him an in with SS, eh? You know, he can sidle up next to him backstage and be all "...So. I heard you accidentally started yourself on fire in college once. Me too. Wanna hang?"
he is sooo adorable <3
xoxo,
La C.
Haha! Too funny...but still LOVE his music!
I think the knowledge that he once set himself on fire actually makes me love him *more* ... as though that were possible. :D
Or he can say "I heard you set yourself on fire at a college once" the next time he ends up at some bar where SS is.
Haha!
Oh! great, fun. i full of enjoyed.
Thanks to sharing with us......
