So this time it's for real, right? That new diet/quitting that job/getting a small business loan/going to art school/breaking up with that hot but assish British guy (I'm look at you, 25 year old self). But then something happens and a valid excuse to avoid your new adventure presents itself. And so we don't do it. That grand, exciting, scary, life-changing thing we were going to do. Maybe we eat Lean Cuisine at our desks for a few weeks and troll facebook for our next sexual conquest but that's as far as it gets. How do we make that scary leap from thinking about doing to actually doing?
Now, I cannot claim to be a total expert on this. There are many a thing that I'd like to do/am in the process of doing that may never quite fall under the done heading. Opening an Etsy shop, writing a children's book and competing in a triathlon to name a few. However! I do have a decent track record of actually completing a good number of the seemingly ridiculous/improbable things that I set out to do. Here's what has worked for me:
Write it down, then start mapping your path
We all know that putting pen to paper is one of the best ways to make things happen. But taking it a a bit further helps even more; start compiling the information the will bridge the gap between what's inside your head and what's out. The address of the applications office at the Pratt Institute, sketches of the jewelry you're going to sell on Etsy, pictures of the jungles in Brazil you plan to hike through. It'll start to seem more real the more you look into it.
Tell everyone you know about it
So now you're doing it: the research, the footwork, the wee, exploratory tendrils of progress. And it's awesome! And you can't wait to tell everybody about it! And you should. Anybody worth knowing will be excited for you and feed your enthusiasm. Also: you'll be a lot less likely to back out of your plan because everyone you know will be asking you about it. How lame will you feel when your BFF inquires about your progress on NaNoWriMo and you get all "Welllll, I got really busy at work and...."? Shame can be a great motivator, yo.
Spend money on it
I don't know about you, but I am exponentially more likely to complete my goal once I've spent money on it. Because then it's for real, for real. So buy the giant hiking backpack, the expensive paint brushes, a few pieces for your new work wardrobe. You'll see them everyday and think about the fantastic new life that you're going to have and make even more steps towards getting there.
Make it irreversible
Go big or go home, right? When you're really serious about something and you know, in your heart of hearts, that it's the right choice, don't allow yourself the luxury of a backup plan. Buy a one-way, non-refundable ticket, slide your letter of resignation under your boss's locked door, drop that love letter into one of those impenetrable blue mailboxes. You've put yourself at the mercy of fate and you are going to have so much fun!
Doing begets more doing
I've really found that one act of doing begets another. Once you've published your novella, you know that you are totally capable to moving to Hong Kong on your own. And after you've negotiated a lease in Cantonese, you can't be deterred from starting an import business. Hiking though Nepal, learning to speak Hindi, touring Paris in four inch heels - all these things are totally doable, you go-getter, you!
What do you do to help bridge the gap between the exciting plans inside your head and your day-to-day life?

Fabulous post! I too, think of many things I wish to accomplish but never seem to get around to doign them. I'll have to take your advice next time!
I loved this post!! Now I'm inspired and want to make some big plans. Horray!
I had a teacher who said to put down your top five goals on index cards and to everyday write down one tiny step that you have done to achive the goal. According to the rules of my teacher, if after two weeks you have done nothing then you have to throw away the index card as it is something you must not really want it. I tell you, the having to throw away the card is just to painful and so I often archive the goals I dare to use this process on.
But, you have really good ways on this post. I am sure you will do it. Hey, I just thought of another thing I do to achieve goals, surround myself with people who believe in you. I believe in you!:-)
get out of my brain, okay? so, now i just have to sign up for those 'serious' yoga classes and start using my oil paints for real, for real.
great post, sar.
Yep, I buy something too! And this is totally lame, but I usually buy something pretty that I want to show off. I just started taking yoga. And yes, I could have taken my mom's old plain-pink mat and just worn my running shorts to class, but instead I bought a pretty new tree-print mat and some VS yoga pants. Now, even when I really don't feel like going, I think "but if I don't go today, I'll have to wait a WHOLE EXTRA WEEK to roll out that pretty tree picture!"
Making friends who do the same thing as you helps, too. I look forward to seeing my yoga friends and if I'm not there, they'll ask where I was. Even if it's not a group activity (like, even if you're into painting or playing the piano), having someone else try to have a conversation with you about your shared hobby usually keeps you on track and keeps your enthusiasm up.
I loved this post. Awesome. You're awesome! ...... I always seem to be at a crossroads in life! Always! I hate it... Seems opposite happens to me then from what I write down or imagine .. Ahhhh... LOL Just reread what I wrote.. does that make sense?
This is a great post.
I have a huge "to-do" list to better myself, but I keep putting it off because it seems like such hard work, and the items on the list will pull me from my comfort zone.
La Bellette: That is a genius idea! I would be so disappointed in myself, throwing out those cards. I am totally adding that to my arsenal of 'doing' strategies
Kelly: I know! I totally just bought some super cute new work out tops!
Pomegranate: I definitely know what you mean. I sometimes get all "Hmmm, yup. Definitely wrote that down. (wander off to eat cheese)"
Jackie: Too true, right? I've kind of made peace with pursuing one goal, really whole heartedly, at a time. At the moment it's this blog :) But I find that I see more results that way and pursuing one thing is better than pursing none, right?
this is always one of those taboo kind of things for people, i think.
this post makes it seem so simple! haha
thanks for this!
Excellent advice... Isn't there some saying that goes like 'He who fails to plan, plans to fail.'
This is a great post :) I'm a big believer in this philosophy, too. That's what I did when I decided I was going to write novels full-time - handed in my notice at work, applied and got into a (hideously expensive) MFA course and just plunged right in. Worked for me! :D
Miss Sarah...
I feel inspired as always...stop it!
Now I have to pull my shiza together...you rock so hard.
Jess
You know why I blog everyday? 'Cuz I'm paying for it. I had a blogger account and it festered and grew eyes like a neglected potato.
And you know what happened once I stopped paying for my gym membership? I got fat.
Also, my favorite technique for getting something done? Tell everyone I know that I'm gonna do it. Then someone's gonna ask.
So I've been kinda planning to get a new camera in the continuation of my being a photographer dream; but it was one of those... "I dont really have the money for it" type things. So I kept putting it off and I found my photography was getting pushed to the side a bit. I finally took the big jump 2 days ago and got the new camera and the very next day got a photo shoot! That $100 went straight to the camera and pursuing my dream. WOOHOO!
Erika! That is so fantastic! If you buy it, they will come, eh? Congratulations!
Hi! Like your post and it is so true! You know you have those moments when you want to do something, it's in your head and then some stuff seem to always keep you from doing them! Like you keep giving youself excuses not to do them? Well, it's time to act and do something about 'em! Right now I'm thinking of learning how to cook! So later when I get off from work, I'm gonna buy me some ingredients! haha
this is great advice, i just love you and your blog :)
